I've always used Photoshop for the graphic design I've done. Now I have a job where I'll be doing some limited graphic design but I currently have no software to do it on. We can't really justify the expense of the full version of Photoshop - is Photoshop Elements lacking in many things I'd really need for graphic design (I can't even really think what those things may be)? Stupidly, I downloaded the trial and then didn't do anything with it and it's expired so I'm hoping that some other low-scale designers might offer opinions. At this point, anything would be better than using Paint and they've approved purchasing Elements...I just don't want to buy it and find out ha ha I can't do what I need to do.

Have you considered Jasc Paint Shop Pro? Oh, I guess it is not Jasc anymore but Corel. I used to use it a while back before I finally got over the learning curve hump in Photoshop.

Is it better than Elements? I'm kind of hoping that Elements is enough since I'm familiar with Photoshop and it should be less work to learn the menus than in an entirely new program. I think. I'm lazy.

I've never used Elements before but from what I know, PSP can do just about everything that PS can do, and some others...but, I understand the aversion to learning a new software. There will be some of that with PSP as the names and tools are different.

mk, I have used photoshop for several years but just recently bought photoelement to put on my husbands computer. He just does basic graphics stuff so I thought it might be easier for him to use. I have played around with it some but haven't had a chance to totally dig into it yet. It's a whole lot like PS as far as the layout, menus, etc. I haven't seen any major things it's lacking. It seems like it would work just great for what your wanting to do.

Didn't the 20D come with a copy of Elements?

depends on what sort of graphic design...as long as you don't need to do big multi-page documents, elements and a modern word processeor--Word, for example, should be fine.
there are also things like Open Office, which is an freeware open source office suite.
[granted, i would feel crippled with anything less than the full CS suite, but i have to use PS, AI, and InDesign all day for various things...if you don't need the power the cost is hard to justify.]

I've installed Elements recently. I'd say it works pretty well considering it's significantly cheaper. There's a few bits it's missing, but I've not noticed a huge amount editing pics.
