I would like to see this site run 2 types of contests... one for photos that were stages/setup, and one for natural photos. Maybe this would be more difficult that it initially seems to me but, here's my idea...

One contest would be for photos that were staged while the other would be for photos that were of more natural objects/scenes. The only way I can explain this is with examples... and until I figure out how to put links in my posts... you all will have to bear with me.

First off... it seems to me that a lot of people have a hard time voting without taking subject matter into consideration. With that said... go back to the archived challenge "Negative Space". The photo called Hangin' On (ranked 14) is very hard to compare to the photo called Oasis (ranked 29). For someone who tends to like B&W photos, Hangin' On would tend to get a better vote than Oasis, simply because it is B&W. The same could be said of people who love landscapes or sunsets, etc..

A second reason to have 2 challenges is that it's much easier to judge an staged photo on composition and lighting than it is a landscape photo. Anyone who has ever staged a photo can guess as to what was involved in creating a photo... but when looking at a landscape, it's very difficult for someone to hypothesize about what went into getting that photo unless they've been to the spot where the photo was taken.

Basically, staged photos are inherently different than naturally occuring photos. So they should only be judged against similar photos.

Does any of this make sense?

What you are saying makes sense, but I love the simplicity of DPchallenge with the single weekly task.. There are other websites out-there that let you submit different types of photo (B&W, Close-UP, Portrait) but I dont find they generate as much creativity as a single challenge that everyone has to adhere to (or interepret in their own special way)... The format for DPChallenge is spot on.. Dont fix what aint broke.
