Don't forget the whale songs, as long as we are discussing non-human music...

If a dog howling is music to you... it isn't to me, and I would vote accordingly.

To the dog its music. Heck 1/2 the noise I hear on the radio is not music. How would you know what it sounds like anyway. Does the challenge say people music?????

As a musician music is a form of expression and communication.

So I do not see your point.

A dog does not know what "music" actually is. To a dog it is strictly communication NOT expression.

Sure. But how is a whistling fish different (visually) from one which is not?
As for the reference to the Sound of Music--I've always taken that as a reference to echo or resonance, equally difficult to photograph.
Why must we make this so difficult? If it seems like live music to you, post it. If it doesn't seem like live music to the voters, you'll soon know.
I plan to be rather liberal in my voting to allow for many interpretations. However, though it may be music to the child who is banging pots and pans with a wooden spoon, I doubt I'll be able to muster enough liberalism in my interpretation of "live music" to vote such an image above a 4. (Jus' bein' honest here.)

For those keeping score, it seems most would mark down a picture not taken at a "gig".

I'm going to go out on a limb so some people can get a better idea for themselves. Here is a link to the picture I liked, but decided now not to submit. It is definitely "out of the box". Would you mark it down as being "off topic"? This would be helpful for others I think.

Casting his instrument down, the musician Feels the Blues...

Thumbs up or down for topicality?

i would love to see some out of the box thinking for this challenge. i went to an outdoor concert last night and got a shot, but I'm quite certain that it will look just like several other shots that will be submitted for this challenge.

i think that out of the box may do really well in this challenge -- i sometimes think that when we see the same type of image over and over we tend to give them all the same score. it would be nice to shake things up -- i, personally, would reward creative thinking on this challenge.

I really do not want to get too far off track on this subject. Owning two Aussie/Border collie mixes, There comunication skills surpass any type of dogs I have ever had. On demand I get the dogs to make a variety of sounds, from a high pitched whine, a bark, a whisper, growl, and more. When I tell my older dog to sing, he goes into a high pitched very low volume whine. Somtimes he does this with his mouth closed. Howling is something that both dogs will start and very simular to wolf howl. When either of the dogs want something, many times they use noises to get me there attention. Sometimes they go off and just make sounds among themselves. Quite entertaining to watch. They will bring a smile to your face when I get them to communicateand make noises.

Live Music to me is music performed live and music is a form of expression and commuication. Instruments do not have to be present.
If I do enter the challenge and decide to go the normal safe route, or photo of one or both of my dogs so be it and I will take the rath of the DPCers.

Music is in the ear of the beholder. There is alot of noise out there that is called music. I would rather listen to my dogs!

Yes, but can they read sheet music? :-)

I didn't mean it was photographable in the context of this challenge. It's just that people were tossing up various non-human "musicians" so I threw the whales into the mix :-)

I completely agree, and hope people make a really strong effort to get concert shots that are just a little different to everyone elses. Get on the stage, try different viewpoints, experiment with lenses, motion blur, high/low key, different camera angles, there are a million different ways to be creative with live concert shots.

honestly where i live, live music presented to the public is very rare~! so personaly, i will be taking this contreversial subject and who knows, maybe my camera and i will be making wonderfull music together, lol. I say vote how you want, and just know, when your entering, expect different interpretations. Myself, i am compleatly open... being young and open helps some times you know~!

I find it so hard to believe that there is any part of this planet where live music doesn't happen nearby. I'm not talking about megastars, but local musicians? Sorry if I'm wrong!

I believe there are quite a few talented musicians who cannot read sheet music. Take for example... a blind musician?

Nobody said that there have to be instruments for there to be music. However a vocalist will refer to his or her voice as their instrument.

Also there's a good chance of a self portrait from me this challenge.

Surely the fun of this contest is not trying to get your image to suit everyone's perfect idea of the topic, but it's to see how your idea compares with that of everyone else?

Surely you're not all that obsessed with scores that you have to determine exactly what criteria people will be voting on before you submit an image...

Lucky for me the Newport Jazz festival is this weekend. Now if I only had a decent zoom lens I would be all set! :/

Anybody wanna donate a 400mm f/2.8 IS???

I will say I do think this challenge theme is much more dependent on your gear than others. Getting those ribbon photos is likely a result of an expensive lens (combo of zoom and low light). Of course talent will come in play (as always), and there will be some good shots with cheap lenses (I took mine with the Canon 50mm f/1.8...wiiiiiide open), but I bet you can roughly correlate score in this challenge with $$$ of equipment. At least more than usual...

My $.02

I took a photo of my radio and titled the image "live music playing now"

How do you think I'll do?

I think the winner will probably employ the flash and burn technique.

Perhaps if you wound the monkey first and used a longer exposure time to capture motion blur....
