Very sophisticated. One of the best photography sites I have seen. At first I thought I would miss the standard buttons (back, refresh, etc.) but that wasn't the case.

We'll be looking forward to seeing more of your entries on this site in the future. Thanks for sharing.

...still waiting, maybe I need an update?

Hi could you try again? It seemed to be a network problem...

Do you think that music would be better off by default? Thinking about it...

I'd say no, which is pretty unusual... I can't think of any other websites where sound doesn't bother me. I do think the music should stay the same throughout the entire site though.

Even if the streaming is at 80 Kb/s, it seems that the player is taking all of the bandwidth available, slowing down the xml download (for the menus). I'm going to disable the music by default and change the splash screen to let the user decide to start with or without the music.

I posted the new splash screen where you can choose.

Some users (many graphic designers) suggested me to go straight to the site without music since 95% of people don't want it.

I think it's quite polite to declare also site requirements.

Can you feed your opinion? //www.silvestrorugolo.com

1) Splash screen;
2) No splash screen - music off by default.

very nice.

What program did you use to make it?

Also I have been looking into adding sound to some of my site, but i couldn't find where to get it. Did you buy yours from a royalty free sound site, or create it yourself, or is there a free download site somehwere?

I really liked the travel photography.
I did not like that I had to wait for all the thumbnails to load before the main image was shown to me. I would like to start looking at the images I can (the ones with loaded thumbnails) right away.
I chose to have music ON.
I think music makes a photography site MUCH more interactive and dynamic.

1. Splash screen yes

The first thing I do when music starts playing on a site is look for the way to turn it off. If I can't find a way I leave the site immediately. I don't care what it is, I think it is annoying and presumptuous of the developer to think I want to hear what they like to hear.

Overall the site is very well designed and a very smooth interface for sure. Your photography is very nice. I like your perspective on many of your shots. well done!

Hi, thanks for answering. I used Flash. The music is bought from a right-free music provider. Why can't you start looking at images? It actually doesn't lock waiting for thumbs loading. You should.

Thanks again.

Curious...which ones have sensor dust? I viewed them all and didn't see any sensor dust.

well it doesn't lock but it says

loading...

until all the thumbnails are loaded, then shows me the large view.

I don't have a problem with it.
The developer isn't assuming you want to hear what they like. They put the music on to complement their photos or visaversa (or however that is spelled). They are presenting an art form. If they feel their art form goes best with music, then it is well within their right to present it with music. They are not ASSUMING you want to hear it, they are merely presenting their art.

Mmmm... it actually depends on your network speed. It actually first starts loading the first image and immediately after that, the thumbnails. 4 concurrent connections are used (2 for thumbnails, 1 free for image viewing and 1 for music). If it shows loading it is because it is actually loading, but it's not a design choice :-(

Thanks again.

Absolutely beautiful site. I usually do not like music on a site, but this is some great Jazz. Your photographs are equally as beautiful. Great work! The gallery interface is very clean, well organized, and easy to navigate. The wheel-scroll feature wasn't obvious though, and clicking outside the Flash area disables the scroll feature. The visitor has to click within the Flash area again to use the wheel.

One thing that takes away from the experience for me is the amount of space that is taken up in the dark reflected area included with the title of the photos. My eye is constantly being drawn to the reflections. I think the dark strip that the title is on would be enough contrast with the white navigation area to showcase your photos.

Once again, great work!!

Spectacular site!!!e I'm currently re-working mine to be a Flash only site and thought I was pretty happy with the layout. Now I have to go back to the drawing board!!! Darn you!!! Are you using a database engine for the pic organization? I'm using a flash interface with a php/mysql engine? How is yours set up?

I use a media management software and get XML out of it. The site interprets them...

Thank you for the nice words.

I hate splash screens, you could have lost me right there if it was my first time.
I personally didn't have a problem with the music (unusually), but like I said earlier it really bothered me when it jumped in-between galleries. If you're really worried about it, have the sound off when it loads up, with a clear way to turn it on.

Edit: to make it easier for you, 2:

I agree with BobsterLobster on this one... I generally view splash screens as unnecessary Pre-loaders are a different story and I view them as required on any Flash site. Music is generally a bad idea because there is nothing worse than having a quite time browsing the web and then getting hit with sounds you didn't want. The music IMHO should ALWAYS be off on ANY website. If it must be there, then you should have a clear way to turn it on if the viewer wants to "enhance" their browsing experience. But again like I said earlier... Spectacular site, the transitions are pretty smooth and I love the layout and ease of navigation.

Hi Silvestro,
here are some of my comments on your site.

Speed / response time for web site = Good (512 DSL)
Layout = Excellent
Interface = Userfriendly (except some points. see negatives below)
Acceptability in internet security aware community = Low (Take this seriously as due to use of flash, plugins, copied music and unsecure site people might see it negatively).

Some Sugessions:
A) I understand the intent for a initial logo/splash screen with your name and mute/music buttons but try merging it in the next page.
B) The back button the picture gallery page is right on the top and since the mouse scroll button scrolls the picture selection peole might not notice it. Also the back button of the web page takes you back to the first splash page instead of the menu page.
C) with each image you seem to have shown a mirror watermark of the same image on bottom / right. This is very distracting to the image and the original / intended meaning and beauty of the picture is lost.
D) Try avoiding the text 'Loading' over the date.
....

I am not a site designer myself so this is my 2 cents worth... Hope they are of some value.

Still, your site is very different and pleasing. Keep up the good work!!

I like the site and the load times (music off) were fine on cable. I'm in the proccess of building a new site myself at the moment and trying to deside if I should go with animation or not. Most modern sites seem to be going in that direction.

I really don't want to have to learn Flash. I staid up til 5 this morning putting in a fade in title after I designed the background for my index page in PS. I used Java to load the tile. Then I get up a while ago and read someones post in this thread and remember about Java Script blockers. Scrap that title.

By the way, I love the Abruzzo shots. I drove down to Teramo from Ascoli about two years ago. That may be as close as I've ever been to Scanno (except flying by on a train a long time ago) I'd love to go there again in the snow.

Hi Asit,

thank you for your comments.

Here is my thinking about the splash screen. I think it has pros/cons. I started a poll on an ultrashock forum and I got a 50/50 as percentage. My reasons for using it is to present people with requirements BEFORE they need them. Moreover, opening the site in a popup (that I think is insulted more than it deserves... ;-) avoid the problem with some people getting confused on what buttons to use to navigate back and forth the site. For flash sites, like mine, throwing out the browser default bar is maybe better...

Anyway I'm undecided and that's why I asked for the community feeling.

Some questions for you:

Why do you think I copied the music? I have a full license to use it which I bought from a company who does rights free music.

What you mean by unsecure site? Where is the text "Loading" over the date? I think it's a bug but I didn't see it.

Thank you again for your time and comments.

S.

i dont like that theres WAY to much catigorization, it should be designed where helen keller can find your pictures
have like a few galleries and take out the shutter speed ect, if you are trying to conduct buisness, the client could care less about what the ISO speed is
