Spend some time here, and you start to notice things in challenge entries. Maybe you recognize a location (like in Zoomdak's photos), or a person (like in Graphicfunk's photos), or perhaps a style (like in Heida's photos) - does that affect how you vote?

I think sometimes it does influence me a little, though I try to be objective and look at it as 'just another photo'.

Good to know...nothing but negatives.
Honestly, I can't tell if I would vote differently on a shot had I not recognized a photographer. Granted, the ones mentioned above are outstanding photographers, as are most who are recognizable. I like to think that their fame doesn't influence me, but I'm just not sure.
When I see a so-so piece of art and then find out 'It's a Rembrandt' or 'This is Picasso' I spend more time looking that I would if it were by a no-name artist. I am trying to figure it out - I know they are wonderous artists, so I think there must be something I'm missing. I guess that sometimes, the joke is on me. |

I'm afraid it does affect my 'voting', even though I try not to let it affect it much.
Like in the case of Heida, I think it's easy to automatically think, "It's a Heida, it's gotta be good."

Thank goodness. I was starting to think I was the only one.

Well if you recognize one of mine, please don't hold it against me. I may not be considered very good right now, but I hope to keep improving and would hate to have my old stuff influence someone to vote me down because they knew previously what I shot was half-crap.

I think it would be unfair to other entrants to vote highly (or lowly)just because you know who the photo may be from. I try and judge each photo as I see it. Heida's entry in the Long Exposure challenge was not my awarded my highest mark, even though I figured who's it may be.

third comment from the bottom, now thats some good guess work!
In challenges i usually guess one or two photo+photographer combinations correctly. I dont think i vote higher on the shots than i would otherwise have voted, or if i do its only by a point.

It's impossible to say that recognising a photographer's work does or does not have an impact on your 'voting'. The 'voting' is supposed to be annonymous, to prevent bias of any kind..once you recognise someone's work bias is automatically brought into the equation.
You can tell yourself that you won't let that influence you, but in doing that very thing, you have introduced bias. IMHO.

I must confess I voted low on an image once because I thought I knew whose it was and I was tired of seeing the same images. As it turned out I was wrong. (Doh! Foot in mouth) But thought about it and decided it deserved the score anyway because I was tired of seeing those images - so it wasn't personal against the photog, but against the subject matter. (note it wasn't a troll-level low score, just lower than the average). Heida may eventually start getting this type of reaction. Nothing against her - she does an awesome job, but several of the images are starting to look very much alike. As long as the best photogs keep changing it up and not "mailing it in" they should not suffer from being recognized.
On another note, I have seen some try to emulate the great ones - some fairly successfully, some not so. But they occasionally get dogged for not being original. Not often though.

BTW, I wasn't commenting on heida's pictures, I was just using her recognizable style as an example: I was saying that I think in general I (and others) would tend to vote a picture higher (not lower) when I recognize it.
EDIT:
On the other hand, I've been thinking, if I recognize one of Joey Lawrence's pictures I might give it a 1, just because it is not fair that a 15 year old kid make such wonderful pictures :) :) ;)

if someone has a recognizable style then they are doing a good job at establishing themselves. If you think you know who shot the photo then great, just vote on the photo. I think people round here are gettin a tad bit jealous of some of the more successful folk.
Also may I add that I think heida's photos for the most part are pretty different from eachother. You may all think they are similar but really look through the photos. A photographer's established style doesn't mean all of their shots look the same. |

First off, I think being recognized would be an honour. There's nothing more kickass then having a recognizable style - I think it's what any artist should strive for. That's what sets apart the famous from the.. non -famous.
I've been correct in matching up the photographer with the photo in the past during 'voting', but I haven't let that affect the vote I give out. |

My votes stay consistent but I am guilty of making fun of the photographer if I can see that it was taken in Iceland
(50% jealousy of ability - 50% Brrrrrrr/Grass/Yawn)
When people take pictures of their baby kids or pets (especially when I can't tell which) I enjoy commenting on how ugly said subject is.
(Although Shutterpug, I must say pugs are too cute to slander)
If there is a female depicted in the picture more or less my age I enjoy leaving my phone number (especially when I recognize it as a certain photographer's girlfriend, sister, or daughter)
In conclusion my vote is on your photograph, but if i recognize something I may leave a comment. |

Thanks Pedxer. So when you see one of my pugs I get an automatic 10? ;-)
