In response to: Subtle colours in the harbor

I quote:
"Anyway, thanks for dropping by and commenting, to joelf: come play again, will I take a picture of a train or truck/lorry the next time for you?"

I looked at your catalogue. You have a lot of nice pictures in your portfolio (tea-time is my favorite), but it looks like you don't have any train or truck/lorry pictures in there! (Edit: Except for that one with the train)

Therefore I humbly request to see a train or truck/lorry picture included in your next challenge (Whichever open challenge is after the "Home Sweet Home" one). As it wouldn't be fair to give you this extra challenge without the benefit of competition, I challenge you to challenge me with a challenge for the challenge (it should be of a similar nature). The picture that ranks higher shall receive the praise and admiration from the other, and the winner should receive a bottle of beer representative of ones respective country (postage included).

Sounds good? I hope soâ€Â¦
Please reply in this public forum if you agree to this and good luck!

Just one bottle?

- why bother about less than a sixpack?
05/23/2003 06:45:47 AM · #5
It's just a token. I think a sixer might cost too much to mail anyways.

To Joelf:
let me start in this open forum (as you requested) by thanking you for bringing a dispute about secondary colors to the general attention. However, you have not really replied to the issues I raised with respect to 'subtle colors in the harbor'.
But now for the proposed extra challenge: I think it would not be appreciated if we were to put in a train or lorry to whatever challenge at hand. I propose that we have an open challenge for ourselves (free challenge, no limitations) to make an addition to our own portfolio within the next two weeks along the lines you suggest.
Who would be there to judge? Any suggestions?
By the way, in view of the sheer madness of the USA at this point in time I doubt that something as explosive as a bottle of beer might be put in the mail. I don't care too much for beer anyway. Let us just settle for a quality print of one of the other's portfolio entries (to be chosen by the winner).

This sentence can never be said too many times:
"I challenge you to challenge me with a challenge for the challenge"
:)

Dear John,

I didn't feel the need to argue about the colours in your picture. The comments you made after the contest were all reasonable. I just wanted to "come play again". I love to play and I think that this is turning out to be a nice challenge.

I appreciate the need not to send beer through the mail, and I like the suggestion of a quality print. A contest of our choice to be taken in the next two weeks is a good plan.

Well I have found an impartial judge! Professional photographer Bruce Dale. A 30 year veteran of National Geographic Magazine, twice earned "Magazine Photographer of the Year", and "White House Photographer of the Year" (check out his biography here) I E-mailed him earlier today after finding his amazing portfolio on Google, and humbly asked him if he would like to be an impartial judge. After explaining the situation and the origin̢۪s of the contest he agreed to do it.

All we have to do now is settle on a theme and a deadline. I did like the idea of a truck/lorry, and I think that two weeks is a great amount of time to pull this off. According to my calendar two weeks is June the 7th say, Noon?

Hope to hear from you soon!

Go for it guys :-)

Hope the professor has some intersting things to say rather than just pronouncing a winner.

Dear Joelf,
I accept the challenge, I am very pleased with the judge you found. However, since I am the one to be challenged I still may choose the weapon. I propose to stick to my original idea: train or truck/lorry. No limitations (i.e. no DPC-challenge edit-limitations, other than that the picture(s) must have been taken within the period of the challenge).
OK with you?
Best wishes,
JohnMK

How interesting! I can't wait to see the results, and to hear what the impartial judge says. :0)

In public, so we can all find out.

Don't forget to count to 10 and turn before you start :)

I note that the vacuous but otherwise lovely exchanges between the bards are attempting to assume literary proportions and therefore propose that the Belle Lettre achieved here be preserved for the purpose of cultured amusement (depite the incessant reference to 'beer') and posterity.

Oooo! Can I play? I have no idea what lorry is (I thought is was a bathroom) but I know what a truck is.

Awww, nevermind. I just noticed there is no beer involved. Dang you!!

You may find my submission for the duel/challenge (with two outtakes) in my portfolio under 'Trains for the challenge'.
Noon over here is earlier than at Joelfs' side of the Ocean.

Joelf, I'm getting slightly concerned. Since I got no reply at all: you didn't do anything dangerous to get the best picture ever of a train or truck?
06/08/2003 01:41:32 AM · #21
No I havn't been squashed or anything... Though i did get a few good pictures...

I'll also put up yours too...

Who will win??

The judge has ruled!

On 12 June 21:52 EDT we received the following message:

Joel and John,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I wanted to be as fair as possible and although I had my own opinion, I thought I might give you guys a once in a million opportunity to have it judged by several of my colleagues I have lunch with each month. I made a print (it would have been nice to have a higher resolution) and showed it to them today.

They include a group with the following credentials:
Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Editor of National Geographic, Life Magazine Chief of Photography Equipment, Black Star photographer, White House photographer, two Photo Librarians, Editor of National Geographic Books, and independent Photo book publisher, an Art photographer, and a photo writer for the Washington Post.

It was the unanimous decision that the train photo was without a doubt the better photo. Many liked the interesting perspective from the converging lines in the rail station. One thought the truck picture reminded him of the Winston Link photos (night photos with flash -- usually of trains) although most also commented that the truck photo showed little of interest.

So there you have it. It would have been my decision also. This is a tough contest to judge. Black and white vs color. Trucks vs Trains. Like judging apples vs oranges. I find the train station more interesting and I like the people on the left side -- though they're a bit hard to see at this resolution.

Both are quiet images. They are pleasant. I wonder what you might have found if you could have waited in that exact spot for an hour or two or three until something totally serendipital happend. Cliches: porter w bags or some little thing that I could never make up in my mind. Maybe the trucks on a rainy night would have been better. Is that the moon in the truck photo? or is it a lamp post in the parking lot? If it is the moon, it is not responsible for the lighting on the trucks because the shadow radiates from the front of the trucks. The technical efforts you put into the truck photo (polarizer, etc, probably never helped much).

Good shooting. Joel, you may wish to look up Winston Link on the web if you are not familiar with his work.
