Does the 20D have spot metering? Are you able to change metering modes? I will be in the market soon for a new camera, and right now it is between 20D, Mark II, and the 1Ds Mark I.

So, any help is useful.

I don't believe any of the Canon's have a true spot meter though the higher end ones come closer to it.

As far as control over the metering modes, yes you are able to change it.

The 20D has three metering modes:

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Evaluative (35 zone)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Partial (9.5% of screen)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Center Weighted Average

and has the central circle in the viewfinder as the metering reference point (I think).

No, no spot.

The 20D has Evaluative metering, partial metering and centerweighted average metering.

I would suggest finding a manual online and looking at the descriptions of each to decide if these will be suitable. I will try to find one or will type out the details but it helps to see the diagrams too.

I think the question is whether all of those modes can be accessed in any of the shooting modes on the camera. The problem with the 300d is that you cannot select the metering mode, it depends on which shooting mode you're in.

You can select any metering mode as long as you're in the "normal" settings (P, Av, Tv, manual); I'm not sure about all the funny modes with little pictures of flowers and stuff, because I never use them :)

I don't know about the 1D mkII, but the 1D has:

"Metering modes: TTL full aperture metering with 21-zone SPC
(1) Evaluative metering (linkable to any AF point)
(2) Partial metering (approx. 13.5% of viewfinder at center)
(3) Spot metering:

a. Center spot metering (approx. 3.8% of viewfinder at center)
b. AF point-linked spot metering (approx. 3.8% of viewfinder at center)
c. Multi-spot metering (Max. 8 spot metering entries)

(4) Centerweighted average metering"
