I have received two comments and pretty low scores for this, my first member challenge. I think I must have misunderstood what people wanted to see for this topic. I took my photo because... I considered it an optical illusion. When I did a search on optical illusion on the internet there were a bunch of pages which had you look at an image and said..if you look closely you will also see a musician in this picture of giraffes (as a rough example). This is kinda why I didnt submit for other challenges because as a beginner you get really worried that your gonna submit the wrong thing and be embarrised. How do others get your head around the meaning of the challenge themes? Do they give you a bit more information about the topic anywhere? I would appreciate any advice and tips on how others come up with ideas that match the theme.

Welcome to the madhouse!
FYI - you shouldn't describe your photo - anonymity rocks!

Don't worry...I'm probably dead last in this challenge! My score is barely above 3!!!!

I hope that the blue ribbon score is between 5-6!

I think we will be competing for that last place Truegsht. Thanks northrop for the tip about not describing my photo..I didnt think about anonymity and how it could affect voting if people know whose photo is whose!

I'm in the same boat. I think I did too good a job hiding part of my "illusion set-up" and now people just aren't getting it. Lowest scores ever... :(

troberge, I too am a newbie here and have been puzzled at some of the interpretations of my work. The scores I have received have been lackluster at best although I can't say I disagree with the lower scores.
My motivation for laying my money down and joining these wonderful creative people is to be pushed into exploring my own creativity beyond my personal "comfort zone". I would propably never had whipped up an "Illusion" picture and spent hours exploring the lighting, composition, major elements if not for the challange.
My only advice would be to explore your own interpretaion and don't play to the masses. For every thousounds of 3,4 scores there are some who will see your vision as a 10.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts barndog and your right - Everything is open to individual tastes. Your right about playing to the masses and the non-importance of low scores. I have already learned so much just from reading the tutorials and I hope to learn a lot more from the large talent base on this site. Good luck in this and future challenges.

LOL that's what I'm getting all the time, a lot of low scores with the occasional 8-10 and I messed up in illusions again, because to me it's an illusion, but not for some in other countries (can't give away too much or it will be recognized).

Oh well, better next time.

to answer the original question - if it is a ChallengeII i always go back and look what was submitted to the first challenge. Partly to get into the swing, partly to make sure im not duplicating a photo from last time (because the sequal is rarely better than the original).

after a few challenges, youll get used to what scores here then youll have to decided if your going to shoot for the voters or shoot OOTB.

I guess I also misunderstood the rules of the challenge because now I have been disqualified. Wow, do I feel really stupid now. I guess I have a lot to learn about these challenges. Good luck to all those remaining in the competition.
