I read the terms of use and FAQ and rules of challenge submissions and I cannot find an answer to this questions. Hopefully someone knows the answer.

Is a photograph of another piece of art considered acceptable for a challenge submission? In that I mean a photograph of a scultpture, a painting or even another photograph.

Is that allowed?

If it's a piece of art or even a photograph, I doubt people will like that and it could be DQed. If it's used as part of a composition, then that's different. By itself, I think it's a no-no. A sculpture on the other hand lends to a different story because you can control the lighting etc.

My 2 cents.

The challenge rules address this as directly as possible. Below is the relevant section (emphasis added):

Subject matter must comply with the DPChallenge Terms of Use. The following are additional restrictions on subject matter:

Artwork: Literal photographic representations of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, computer artwork, computer monitors, and televisions. A literal representation is one which is composed in such a way as to compel the voter to rate only the work of art represented and not the artistic decisions made by the photographer (e.g., lighting, composition, background elements, etc).

GeneralE, this is a very clear answer and exactly what I was searching for but seem to have missed while perusing the rules.

Thanks for the clarification.
