you're happy with too many of your shots? I suppose I shouldn't be.. but I came back from the zoo yesterday and am generally happy with a good number of my shots.. and now I don't know where to start! (Usually I take about 60-70 shots and delete about 55-65)
I have a lot of similar shots but am hesitant to delete any because I haven't determined which one is 'best' yet.

Keep the top three in a tiff, and the rest in jpg for referance.

Only shots that I erase are the ones that are absolutely beyond repair. |

2 months ago, I came back from the zoo with 7 cd-r worth of pictures. I wished I had a Dvd Burner. |

Once you get a DVD burner, you'll end up coming back with 7 DVD-Rs worth of pictures instead. It's amazing how fast you can fill them up.

I'm sure that I'll get around to deleting some eventually. One thing I don't like is having to wade through a bunch of my 'trash' shots in order to find the ones that I'm proud of.

Just 60-70 shots? That's it? I usually take no less than 50 shots of one building alone :) One time I was in Florida at the West palm Beach Zoo and I photographed the flamingos for about an hour and a half. I walked away with about 100 shots of just them pink critters :)
Wait until you get a high capacity card and a DVD burner as tranquino said :)
Post your pics and we'll help you sort through them :) |

Well, the fact that I only have 640mb total storage space and shoot RAW is a big part of my low number of shots. I usually take a lot more.. but when I start running low, I take a break and go through and delete all the blurry/overexposed/etc shots - ones with bad composition or few redeeming elements are usually deleted too. Only downside to this is that it takes a little more time and drains my battery faster. The upside is that it forces me to review my shots (though on a small LCD) and realize what went wrong in the first few shots so that I can get it right in the next few.
I'm going through them right now.. I think I'll end up keeping most just for fun. I'm doing minimal processing (RAW editing, then Curves) on most of them - more complex things on just a few. Thanks for offering though.

Brianh's method of reviewing and deleteing in the field is a big help toward keeping your hard drive from getting choked. Another thing I have trained myself to do is deleteing the "trash" shots the first time I view them on the computer. I used to think that I should go through them all at least once, maybe twice, before I start trying to decide which ones to dump. But it saves a lot of time if you go ahead and get rid of the ones you know you'll never use, or even bother to edit, the first time you see them. Sometimes you shoot a lot of different shots of the same subject to make sure you cover variations in exposure and composition; or sometimes you keep shooting something that really interests you (such as cute kids, or animals in the zoo) mostly because you like the subject and are hoping for that one-in-a-million moment to occur. In those cases you should be able to delete at least half of them the very first time they come up on your screen, and don't spend any more of your time on them.
