I am interested in finding a way to see if a internet retailer is legit or not.

I am always searching for deals and just want to know that I am protected somehow.

Is there a way to do this quickly?

OR

Do I need to go to some Government agency and go that route?

Check reselleratings.com for user feedback.
Check the Better Business Bureau for listings.
Do a basic google search. More often than not, someone else has already posted about a site if it's a scam.
Check the whois to see who the domain is registered to.

There are other, more indepth ways to do it but these will usually get you pretty far. Resellerratings.com is a gem.
