OK check this out...

Download this file, and open it up in photoshop



Now open an adjustment curves layer, and play around with it, but get it to something like this...



Is that crazy the amount of color information that was in the original file, even though it looks really close to just plain black on the monitor? Actually, on my monitor, I can make out the differences in the original, but just barely.

Curves are powerful--great example. I had a somewhat similar experience with one of my photos. Of course, I further distorted the colors ...
