This post will explain how to bring back lost detail in your photo due to underexposure, without overexposing other areas in your photo. (Mind the spelling) I will be working with adjusmant layers, you can add an adjustment layer by clicking the half filled circile at the bottom of you layers pallete .

First I will open an image that needs to be corrected. You can see how the rocks have hardly any detail at all.

First I would like to give a slight hue/sat adjustment. Not nessasary in all images I just felt that this one need a little before I got started.

Ok, now I will go ahead and add curves adjutment layer, whith the curves box open drag you curser over the underexposed area, you will notice a small dot on the diagnale line insde the curves box. Note: when you move your curser off the image the small dot will disapear, the dot just gives you a general idea of where to drag the curves line.

Now move your curser to where the dot was and click and drag the line up until your underexposed area has the detail you want. This will over exspose the rest of the photo but dont worry about that yet.

One you have it where you like it, select the brush tool and and select black as your foreground color and paint over the area that is over exposed, NOTE: as you get closer to the area that was corrected reduce the opacity of the brush. Thsi is pretty a pretty simple explination, I will try to write a tutorial explaing it in more detail. Hopfully it will be added to the site tutorial.

You can now play wiht the image and give it different effects, in the same way you brought back the details of your dark areas.

Like so

Like I said I will try to make this better once it is perminet.
