Being involved in the scene I will add that the "goth" scene is rather diverse. You have some main branches though "goth punk", "fetish goths", and "romantigoths" .
The first are very similar to the classical punk movement from out of which the goth movement largely grew from. The fetish goths is the extreme end often mixing sex, BDSM, vampirism, blood, etc. This is the world of pleather and pleasure as some would say.
But perhaps the most wonderful to shoot is the latter...the "Romantigoths". These are very classical in nature. Often wearing elaborate period outfits of victorian design. And can provide some brilliant photography subject matter.
One can make a mistake of going to black when shooting gothic and become mere "clothing ads". When doing such shots, incorporate candle lighting, old books, try to bring yourself back to the 18th century horror novels. Realize that goths do embrace colors, however they tend toward darker subdued tones (deep purple, night blue, and blood red). With many such models a black and blood red dress/attire offers one of the best shooting subjects. But you'd be surprised how gothy a white can be. See if you can find an old used wedding dress to fit your model. There is much you can do with that. There used to be a gothic band "Wedding Party" and the lead female singer was on stage in a wedding dress.
Also, realize the "pale skin" is the big thing in the gothic world of modelling. Unlike the burnt, dark, tan of mainstream model the pale white is to be captured. So be to make a mental note on exposure/development to retain and emphasize the paleness of skin.
Also, there is an underlying sorrow, even laughter filled with madness. Try to capture that in the poses and expressions.
"hey are usually whiney, pampered brats that want attention. their whole subculture is okay with me but pu-lease, so many think they are being original and away from the 'normal' stereotype when they are just part of a stereotype themselves. and black lipstick is SO 2 years ago. ;-)"
Funny thing is hearing some 12 year old decry I'm goth. And immediately older goths inquire of what music they like... "Oh...i don't know...P.O.D., Limp Bizkit, Britney Spears..." and it's like "uh...yeah..."
The irony, is that most of the goths I know in the scene are all like "well, I'm not really goth...just seem to fit in" *shrug* This has formed it's own joke that if you claim to be goth...you're not. And that all true goths deny actually being such. *lol*
People also fail to realize that there is much laughter and much myrth within the goth scene. Albeit, within it's only little circles and containers.
If you want to do one of the best gothic shoots. Go to an old library and go to their "old never read" book section...use it for a backdrop ;) |

lol well i just want to say thanks again to everyone for helping me out and even though i didn't get to apply all the goth knowledge that i gained since the model didn't want a goth shot, i still had a lot of fun doing this. thanks everyone! :)
