Why doesn't your assistant want to be involved? It's just another style of photo?

Here is some details about Goth that might help you wrap your mind around it.
"Goth in its simplest form, is a subculture. A group of people who feel comfortable within each others company. There is no specific thing that defines what you need to do or be to fit into the goth scene (except of course the implied black clothing).
Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind. This kind of free thinking and rejection of dogma earns only rejection in todays society."
If I was going to shoot goth I would go for some of the following:
-Black Dress
-Black Eyes
-Black Lips
-Earrings
-Tattoo's (if not real get fake one's... no color.. black)
-Dog Collars
-Fish Net
-Backgrounds: black, red, candlelight, elegant but dark... not necessarily the lighting it can be bright... but make sure the tones of the background are dark... no bright colors
-No smiling unless its a dark kinky one
-if you can find a dungeon type environment it could be kewl
mmm i have other ideas... but not sure how to communicate them... hope this helps

res0m50r...
Those are amazing tips.
I have no intention of doing a photo shoot in this category but feel compelled to save your comments. I can visualize the photos already, just from your notes.
Bravo!

Joey Lawrence here
Here's the thing about self acclaimed 'goths':
they are usually whiney, pampered brats that want attention. their whole subculture is okay with me but pu-lease, so many think they are being original and away from the 'normal' stereotype when they are just part of a stereotype themselves. and black lipstick is SO 2 years ago. ;-)
But for the 'gothic look', I can help with that, I'm assuming grungy, maybe 'posh dirty' a better title.... Take a gander at my 'emotive' and 'people' gallery for some examples. The best thing I can suggest is areas away from the sun, rugged texture, lots of shadows. Stay away from graveyards, cliche. dirt alleyways, construction sites and old abandoned places may work good. It may not look much when shooting (in fact she might put on stupid 'IM DEPRESSED' faces) but it's the post processing that has to make it look gloomy. So again, take a look at my profile and if you need any help processing just e-mail me |

One of my favorite alt style photographers. A little more extreme than you are looking for, but may give you some ideas on a style.

It's 'nudity alerts' that makes kids thing there is something wrong with naked bodys. But of course... That site is a little extreme and you know how the churches feel about teens getting aroused... Har har har! |

thanks, res0m50r! ya im thinking like black and red. the clothing and makeup should be all up to her but i've seen what she has and it fits your description. definitely no smiling. for the background, if i can't find a good place, i'll just shoot with a black background

Looks like you've got a lot of helpful info. Not really goth, but dark portraits are among my favorite subjects. Hope it goes well and post the results:-)

Don't forget, goth is also old school, goth is (musically) metal oriented. Could be cut up classic punk t-shirts or old fashioned dresses or even classic wedding dresses...

as i promised i'll show you the picture.
well turns out, the model didn't really want it goth looking. she just wanted it Dark. so i'm not sure if this is Dark. but oh well. what bummed me was that when i sent her the file, she didn't like how her nose looked pointy because of how part of it was covered by her sweater...so she cropped out everything except for her eye, rotated the picture 90 degrees, and put it on her myspace. just great, huh? lol
well, here's the shot

edit: fixed url
i'll probably bump this up for the night crowd, so that the people who responded to this post can see this haha
