I've been a member of DP for over a year now. I love the challenges. They've made me a better photographer. I have a suggestion that could possibily help with overall submission quality and fluidity to the submission process.

Currently, on the main page, there are two columns: 1. Challenge Submission & 2. Cast Your Votes!. I don't have a problem with the way that is setup. However, I would suggest adding one more column to the left of the first column that says something like "Coming soon!" or "Upcoming Challenges."

I think that one week is a very limited amount of time for most people to think, photograph, edit, and sumit their photos. Actually, the "thinking" part is what takes so long...for me, personally. I went to Alaska a few months ago. I didn't have access to the Internet, so I wasn't able to see what challenges were going on during the week I missed. I was pretty bummed. On the other hand, if I had know what challenges were "on the horizon," I might have been able to get some good, relevant shots for the challenge(s).

The challenges in the new column do not need to have a set date attached to them...it would be more of a list of 5 or 6 challenges that would be coming along in the next 4 weeks (as an example). That would give everyone a little more time to think about picture ideas and ultimately improve the overall quality of the submissions.

I second the motion! This is a good idea, gives us a little time to think ahead and get excited. How about it, could ya' list 4 or 5 upcoming challenges? They don't even have to be in any particular order, just the next set, so we can all be thinking.

Thus the challenge part.

I think too many people are rushed with their photography. I read a thread a few weeks ago about a guy who left because he was only taking pictures for challenges. I'm not saying that's a good or a bad thing. I'm just saying that allowing people to think, ponder, and dream a little more will improve the overall quality of the pictures. Not everyone on the site either has the experience and/or lives in an incredibly scenic area (**cough**...Iceland...**cough**) where they can walk outside and snap a winning shot two seconds later (that's an extreme exaggeration...but you get the picture). I typically don't have enough time to ponder what I'm doing...I'm always rushed to get a shot for the challenge. As a result my pictures have suffered (not all...but some).

I have less and less time to enter challenges as my photography develops, as I'm spending more time on my specialist areas. I've seen this happen with loads of great photographers on DPC, and this is why I think we should have regular monthly free challenges. However, I've already argued this to death but so far nothing has persuaded me that they're a bad idea.
