I just finished making an adapter to fit my camera so I could use a cable release. Here's how it was done:
First I shaped a piece of plastic (with an adhesive foam backing) to fit my camera. Then I glue a nut to the plastic where the shutter release is located. I then drilled holes for the cable release and power buttons. Next I glued a piece of velcro (hook side) to the plastic. Then I peeled off the adhesive backing on the plastic and attached a piece of rubber glove to keep it from moving on the camera. Last of all I cut the other piece of velcro (soft side) to length and fit it on the camera. And voila a "Ghetto" cable release.

Have already applied for a patent but anyone is welcome to copy for their own use. lol Comments/questions welcome. |

Great job! I have been looking for a way to do this for 3 years...and what's funnier, I have used a Velcro-based strap arrangement much like your's on something else!
What are the specs on that nut and what type of glue did you use? |

Excellent! You certainly didn't waste any time getting this done. |

Thanks guys. GeneralE, the closest I can come to in terms of size is 5/16". Really not sure what the thread size is. I bought the cable release and went through my junk tin and luckily found the correct size. Hope this helps. |

Sorry GeneralE, I didn't mention before, I used Loctite Super Glue. |

THIS is the coolest ting i have ever seen, but with my camera's lag time I find i don't really need a cable... stupid lag time |

This is great, thanks for posting. Have been looking at getting a desktop tripod and shutter release, though Jessops want to charge £21 for just the adaptor for use on cameras with no cable release socket... madness.
Bring on arts and crafts time :) |

Kaiser have a similar product, p/n KAI6154. Available from Speedgraphic & Jessops in the UK for less than £10. |

Sweet. Although the Jessops product page carries absolutely no details :-/
So, a couple of questions:
Does it fit the 602 (and if you have one, how well does it work?) and do you have any recommendations as to which cable release to buy to go with it?
Owen, cheers for the original post - unfortunately my handicraft skills are not up to even this job!

Many thanks for the tip there! I have a copy of the Jessops catalogue, the Kaiser one's in there but hidden away in small print... dont want us to know there's cheaper ones out there.
If I cant get one made on the cheap then this is nicely priced. Thanks again.

Bod - Not got one myself yet. Found this site which has a description of what seems like the same item. Looks as though it should fit across the 602 shutter release width-ways, wouldn't block the command dial and top buttons that way but may inhibit the on/off switch.

Oh! Cool! Cool! Cool! I've been kicking myself for not being able to purchase the 602 model that has a threaded cable release socket (didn't know that one existed!). My hubby is very handy - maybe he'll make me one. (He made me a new adjustment knob for my tripod when I lost one while out on a photoshoot in the snow.) THANKS! |

About 10 seconds after you made this post my workmate (who's recently started entering here) came scooting over on his wheely chair to tell me he has one of these from an old SLR. I now have it in my possesion.
The good news - it works.
The bad news - the plastic bit that holds the cable release is roughly the same size as the shutter button on the 602, and it is not flush with the strap, so you can't put it on tight without pressing the button. It needs something like the plastic part that Owen made to make it really useable.
