I know the police can't give out details of a case but how do you find out if and when a case is or has gone to court? And, in Canada, are the hearings/trials open to the public?

In the states, courts are typically open to the public with court dockets posted. Including which case is being held in which courtroom. Obviously in some very high profile cases, seating is limited, but even then it is technically open to those that have seats.

Often there are courthouse papers (newspapers) that will list cases before the courts.

For starters, you need to know which court is hearing the case and, hopefully, the case number. Depending upon the court, you may be able to look up the docket information online though there may be a fee. Assuming you're talking about Alberta courts, did you start looking for information here?
