Cars cars cars...how many entries with car(/s)indicating wealth !! There are many of them. One thing is sure, 'car' has won the vote before even the voting started as the symbol of wealth, sign of affluence !!!!
This is a nice insight into the general psychology of ours. |

Well, when you think of what people typically use to show off their material wealth, it's usually a car. Or two. Or three.
I specifically didn't enter this challenge just because of what you said. I figured even if I went out and took a drop-dead gorgeous photo of a great car, voters would be saying "Oh, geez, another one?"
...that and I couldn't think of anything else... |

I'm not sure if there are more cars than there are shots of money...

I think it also reflects a typical 'first world' mentality.

My thoughts exactly, first world folks have no idea what wealth of the third world means or in fact is..
Jewellery, cars, money, luxury homes etc., are not even in most of third world inhabitant's vocabulary or that they have even seen anything like that up close..

So...are you saying that jewelry, cars, money, etc. don't represent affluence to people in the third world?

its true, my first inclination was too find myself a mercedes and shoot its hood. instead i took a shot in the blistering sun with what i thought still represented 'affluence' but as usual in these challenges i was quite wrong. not complaining... just think it's funny that's what represents wealth to the majority of us.

Yes, I guess they do, just thought you could look at it also from a poor person´s perspective not exclusively from a person who can probably achieve affluence such as jewellery or fancy cars...got it really wrong I guess.

I'm not sure you should have expected anything but a "first world" thinking on a site filled with people with Hundreds if not thousands in camera equipment, computers, internet, editing software and the time to spend taking photos of "wealth" to submit, for no reason other then because they can or they enjoy it(or they hope for a ribbon.)
But it is a good thing to have people that do try and change their point of views and take photos like that. As there are some of us that do get it. And it does help remind us how good we do have it. And how we can very easy take being able to eat every day for granted.

I wanted so badly to post a car shot for this challenge, but what is one to do!! The Saleen S7 was in the shop for a new paint job,the wife took the Maybach 62 to Myrtle Beach and the kid drove the Lamborghini Murcielago to Vegas for a week or two...All that left me with was my golf-cart,and,realistically,who would want to look at a photo of a 50 year-old 300SL "Gullwing",anyway ?!? |

Why would we approach any challenge from any perspective but our own? |

Just because we are the ones taking the picture doesn't mean we are trying to put our slant on it as far as meaning goes. Sure, the composition and whatever creativity is our own but the message should come from the image.
Let me give an example.
How could a photojournalist in Afghanistan ever tell the story of the Afghan people and their plight if they were always thinking from their point of view? It would be very one sided and not necessarily accurate.
Just my 2 cents.

You're absolutely right, must be a cultural thing with me or my constant viewing of the "less" affluent that steers my perspective..we live and learn constantly and that's a good thing :)
