What is wrong with this image? When I took it, I felt (and still do) that it is a strong 6, but it has struggled all through this comp. So I am looking for critique as to how I could have made this better.

I left you a comment. (I didn't vote or comment during the challenge)

might not be hitting 6 because of 3 factors that come to mind when looking at it...1) parts are blown out (lower right of top wrench) 2)contrast is a little off 3) if you're doing still life, you really need something extra to make it stand out..it should still tell some kind of story. |

1. Lighting is poor, both in direction and in having too much contrast.
2. Composition is awkward; more of a diagonal would have worked better, and it's cropped too tight for comfort at bottom.
3. Blown highlights are an "automatic" deduction with the voters.
4. One is left with the feeling that these wrenches could have been better arranged in relationship to each other to express your vision.
5. There's no story here, nothing beyond shape & form to engage the viewer. Such an image needs to be technically flawless to score well.
Robt.

I concur with everything he said. I would've given it a 4 probably. |

I think Robert says it all and honest as always. Take a look at the top ten shots and then yours. The interest level is just not there in comparision. Each cahllenge you are competing against the other entries. This batch had some jems. |

For what it's worth, I kind of like the composition. I realize that technically, it's got some flaws and it really isn't what one would call a colourful image, but just because it didn't score a 6, don't feel like you have to run and hide. It is a picture that does actually capture a certain beauty. I feel the picture is quiet in it's mood. Give it a hair more space on the bottom and it'd make a fair calendar pic for a tool company.
Don't feel too bad!
That having been said, I feel that it needs to be more clear on the focal target - in this case, perhaps all three wrenches need to be sharp. Also, as the other said, watch that lighting.
Try putting a nut in the wrenches and fanning them around it? |

Before you enter a challenge, take some time and ponder what types of shots other people might COMMONLY enter, then try to do something else.
As much as some people really hate it, there is a great deal of value to knowing your audience and providing them with something that will "wow" them a little.
NOTE: I think your score is pretty good!! I'm always happy with a 5-something. It's the 4's that make me want to run to the nearest corner ;-) |
