I'm looking to buy an new camcorder for under $1000, and I need some help.
I honestly know very little about camcorders, except for what they share in common with digital cameras.

Any recomendations on what I should get? I'm pretty sure that I one that records onto MIni DV. I was looking at this one, but I'm not sure

Canon's cameras are excellent, one standard MiniDV camera is the Canon XL-1 and Canon XL-2. They make a cheeper variety, the GL-2. Still professional quality.

So saying that the Optura Xi would be an excellent pro-sumer camera.

The Panasonic PV-GS250 has 3 CCDs and optical stabilization. It gets highly rated on C-Net (its the highest rated camcorder in the $1000 range, and almost as highly rated as the $3K camcorders).

On the negative side, its low light performance may not be so good. The Panasonic's CCDs are 1/6 inch vs the 1/3.4 inch CCD the Optura Xi has.
For what its worth, the sales guy at Best Buy said that Canon had disapointing video in low-light situations, and that JVC and Sony were best in low light.
