I'm wondering if anybody has an idea if certain lenses/types of cameras are more or less 'banned' from certain events. I took my Rebel and Canon 75-300 IS to the Mercedes-Benz Cup (part of the US Open Series) last week to take some pictures and had no problems (maybe cuz they were in my backpack when I walked in? or they look amateur enough?).

On to the point - my friend just went to the Bank of the West Classic (also part of the US Open Series) and they told him that he wasn't allowed to use an SLR at the match. Now he's at some sort of Grand Prix and they told him that he's not allowed to use his 70-200 f/4.

What gives? Are they really that paranoid about people selling pictures? Has anybody else had similar experiences?

Yeah. Just this month there was this Tuska festival (tuska = pain in finnish). It's a Finnish heavymetal music festival with lotsa metal bands and stuff.

The "rules" part of the website for the festival said, that no SLR cameras were allowed, and that people are free to bring whatever Piss & Shit cameras they have.

I dont see how they can stop you using a camera just cuz the lense.
Either they allow no cameras or they allow any.

I think they just don't allow professional equipment in. Maybe they saw your 300d and lens and figured you were ok ;) haha just kidding -- you probably just slipped in unnoticed.

It's true unfortunately. Staples Center (home of the Lakers) is pretty strict about the lens size. I had my D70 with 70-200 and cought grief. The security guard let it slide because I had already brought it in. They didn't mind the camera quality just lens size. The San Diego Sports Arena will not let you bring any type of zoom lens into the facility without prior consent. I have been running into this problem more frequently lately and it is becoming a major inconvenience. I even have resorted to the " I am with the Press" line. That only works if my photo editor knows where I am.

Just walk in with a 500mm prime.
It aint a zoom ;)

What a stupid rule, when some of those pocket digitals can zoom way further than a 70-200mm

lmfao.. Next thing we hear, a guard throws someone out because the camera had a "12x digital zoom"

I don't understand these rules, its kind of lens discrimination. So you cannot take your 70-200 Nikkor or Canon or whatever with you, but you could possibly walk in with the quite good Canon 70-300 DO IS and get great results.

What if you bring in a painter with really good eyes?

"The painter is fine, but you'll have to leave the eyes outside, sir"

At Bank One Ballpark here in Arizona they don't allow cameras with lenses longer than 6 inches. My next move is to take my 500mm reflector lens next time.

Wow, I'm surprised that everyone has run into things like this before - I've never heard of this lens discrimation until now. I think that the more amateur look of the silver rebel and Canon 75-300 may have indeed been the reason that I slipped through, whilst my friend with his white canon lens are under closer scrutiny. It's unfortunate that a simple hobby like photography is so heavily restricted at some of these events. Good point about the DO IS, Azrifel - I bet a lot of people could slip through 'undetected' with that rather than the 70-200 Ls.
