Not to be rude, but.... to me it doesn't feel like "soft focus". It feels more like "out of focus". Like maybe the baby's face was too close for the lens to focus.
This got me to thinking ... so what's the difference between soft focus and out of focus??? And gee... I don't have a really good answer. Except it seems to me that even with soft focus, the image itself feels like it is in focus, but that the details within the image have been softened.
Anybody else care to jump in and explain better?

here's a 'soft focus' shot... 'cheated' with neat image, but could have done the same effect other ways.
basically, all elements of the photo seem in focus to the eye.. in the case of the baby photo, theres no background to show the difference in focus. also, the points of light on an out of focus shot tend to 'grow' larger than normal, whereas a soft focus shot doesn't typically do that.
mind you, used properly, an out of focus shot can work wonders.
forgot to add pic link

It's easy to tell that this one is OOF because of the bokeh examples that are ON the lips of the baby. I can't really explain exactly what makes a soft focus shot soft focus, but an OOF shot is any shot where the focus is not at it's sharpest.
oh, and the floor in the backround is in focus ;-)
