IMO I still believe that with a complete web site system all private messages etc should be accessible through the web site itself, not sent to email addresses! So when you log on, you can see what messages you have and it's all handled internally! I use quite a few forum sites where this happens and it's so much neater and easier!

It would be nice that way you will not have to go and check your email to know if you have email. Would be nice if they could do an interactive on site email program that would let you know "you have mail", like AOL.
There could be an email Icon on the status bar to the left that would change color when you have mail and when you receive mail it could play a .wav " YOU HAVE A PM".

I've seen php based web sites that will actually give you a pop up when you log on to say you ave a message!
Maybe something like this can be looked at??

I sent a PM to someone and I have yet to find out if they recieved it, and it didn't just go into their SPAM folder. |

The disadvantage of that approach is that all messages are stored on the host server and use up space that D&L are paying for. For this reason, most sites that use internal PMs set them up so your inbox will only store, say, 10 PMs. As more come in, the oldest get deleted. So if you get a LOT of PMs in a short period of tiem, it's perfectly possible they'll get dumped before you ever see them.
I like the e-mail approach, which gives me complete control over what I save and what I toss.
Robt.

I've always prefered internal PM systems over email solutions.

I'd rather have all my email in one place rather than have to go to all the different sites to check for messages.

I also like having all my email in one place. The other advantage is that they are saved on your own computer not on someone else's server (I use Outlook Express). I tossed AOL for that reason. I couldnt access any of my AOL mail unless I had their program even if I saved copies to my computer with their save feature.

You can check your AOL mail from any online computer with any browser by logging-in at AOL.com. You may not have access to your address book and other features, but you can definitely read messages. |

Yes, but the CEO is just on his way to a very long stint as a guest of the taxpayer.
BTW - re the original post, my preference would be for e-mails on the site itself with user option of a notification and/or a copy sent to regular e-mail address. I don't think storage and bandwith for a few (OK, maybe more than a few) e-mails is really an issue which can be taken seriously for a photography site storing this volume of images and having this many paying members.

That is part of my point although this is new since I had my membership. You have to be online and you have to log on to their website and on top of it you have to fill in all your personal info etc. to be able to have access to your e-mails. Just a bit of a peeve of mine. I just think they are control freaks LOL

If it went to onsite PMs, I'd like emails to at least remain an option. I like the ability to read and reply to PMs through email, without having to log on to the site. I don't typically log on very often from work but I do check email frequently so that allows me to answer SC questions in a (semi) timely fashion.
There are also many things I'd rather see implemented ahead of this. |

How do you think e-mail normally gets to your computer? Magic?

I prefer getting PM's in my email.
as for AOL issues, AOL is like a really bad virus - you need to clean that off your hard drive immediately!

Yes AOL is bad -- the knowledgable users of the internet have long cursed the AOL hoards. But think for just a moment how bad it could get if these millions of clueless users did not have AOL to hold their hand and filter their content to the internet. **shudder**
Present company excluded of course -- if you feel the restrictions they place on the masses, you are by definition not a clueless user.

It may work that way for the SC, but us mere mortals have to log into the server to reply to a PM -- sent by web-form, not email client.
I like getting the communication directly to me (by email), but I don't like the hurdles required to respond. A way to reply directly to the PM from my mail client would be a great plus. The reply address doesn't have to be the senders email, it could be a server address with instructions to forward the message to the sender.
However, there is another downside to PMs in email -- no way of knowing if the get where they are goind. Too many spam filters send PMs to the bin.

k, i dont really care about where my PM's go, but i would like to have a link for a PM added under peoples names after they leave a comment. it would make thanking them so much easier.

yes, a 'reply by PM' button would make a nice addition -- especially on portfolio comments where the commentor is probably not going to see a response posted with the comment.

I like having PMs emailed to me. I use a handheld device most days, and I can get my mail with one button push, rather than having to log on to a site. Even using my laptop, I still prefer to do all my correspondence from one place, rather than having it spread out across different sites. I vote, Keep it as it is!

That wasnt my point, I can use outlook to download my e-mails and go offline and still be able to read them and draft replies or reference information from the messages etc. without having to rely on a website and being online to do that.
The sarcasm is not necessary really!
