Can someone tell me if I want one of these? I've decided not to make any decisions on my own today.

The 1.8 is probably my best lens. I have the 70-200mm 2.8L and I still think it is my best lens.
This shot was taken with mt 85mm 1,8 indoors in low light with no flash. Razor sharp...

The 1.8 85 is a wonderful lens, especially at the price. I nearly bought one, but I didn't need that range covered. I'll probably have one someday.

first off... the 1.2 is not better at everything. Optically it is superior, but focus speed is not as fast as the 1.8. Also... the price difference is huge. The 1.8 from what i've heard is a fantastic lens for the most part. It's a good price too, if you want it, pick it up.

For people saying the f/1.2 85 is better than the f/1.8.. May I ask if you actually own one? Further, do you own the f/1.8??
I agree with kyebosh, with f/1.2 isn't better than the f/1.8 for a number of reasons.
I was intending to buy the f/1.2 until I evaluated the f/1.8, which I've had for a while. For me shooting indoor sports focus speed is very important, and the f/1.8 is significantly faster focusing. I'd go as far as saying exceptionally quick focusing.
The f/1.8 is a top of the line lens with only minor reduction in quality over the f/1.2. I'd compare it to the 50/1.4 vs. the 50/1.0. Quite simply most people do not need the 85/1.2 or the 50/1.0.
On a 1.6x camera the 85 is fairly telephoto, so perhaps not spectacular for some portraiture, but for indoor sports and other low-light photography it's excellent.
Also, I think you'll find more sports photographers have the f/1.8, and those that do, rave about it.

Paul,
I do own the 85mm/1.2, and I have used the 85mm/1.8 several times.
I didn't buy the 1.2 because of it's focusing speed, but because of it's superior sharpness compared to the 1.8. Beside, if aboslutely need the speed, you can use AI focus.
I've also had the pleasure to test the 50mm/1.0, and I must say my 50mm/1.4 is far far sharper. Of course this could be due to spesific lenses, but I have yet to see a very sharp photo made from the 50mm/1.0 anywhere on the Internet.
The 85mm/1.2 lens is by far my sharpest lens in the bag, outperforming my 50mm/1.4, 100mm F2.8 Macro and 70-200/2.8IS. It's well worth the $, even though it is a big heavy. Even at 1.2 it's amazingly sharp.
If you can afford the 1.2, you won't regreet it.

Terje,
I agree, the 1.2 is a VERY sharp lens and if that's what you need it's excellent.
Good to see someone providing an opinion based on experience!

I have owned both. I'm currently selling a 1.8. I like the 1.2 better, not because it is faster lightwise or because it is sharper (i'm not sure it realy is) but because the FX are different. At f/8 most people couldn't tell an image taken with either apart. At f/2.8 it is a whole diferent story. The difference in the aestetics at a wide aperature are great.

I own the Canon 85mm 1.8 USM and I love it.
Very fast AF, beautiful bokeh.
I highly recommend it.
