I just bought one for IR work, but across the viewfinder, it says "nightshot is invalid" when the Hoya R72 is on it.

What does that mean? I'm taking the pix anyway, but they aren't good at all.

And how do I change the ISO values? I didn't get a manual with this.

If I recall correctly, the IR and laser range-finder are just INSIDE the lip of the lens, so if you have a filter on, it's gonna be covering them.

If you want to use the IR bulb, I dont think you can use it on M A or S. Just on the auto modes, hence the "nightshot is invalid" message. i've heard people put black tape over the bulbs for IR work sometimes. Have a look at www.dpreview.com I knows its been cover on the sony-talk forum there.

Goodluck dood!

Thanks guys. This is what I am after:

Those were taken with the R72 and some with an additional ND filter. I have limited success with the 20D, just cannot focus clearly, but the images are gorgeous.

Have posted at dpreview. I will solve this! :)

I am on the trail...seems that the shot is totally white in auto modes, so I started stacking (actually holding 3 polarizers) next to the R72. The picture got much better. Not quite right. I ordered a ND8 filter yesterday, so I think that will take care of the problem.

But, what I want to post, is in my research, I found Fujipix is launching a 9mp camera in Aug or Sep:

Sounds like a great second camera. One of their color modes (in addition to B&W, Color) is Chrome. What is that?

the chrome setting is supposed to mimic fuji velvia film which has higher contrast and saturation than normal

I bought a Sony F707 last week just for IR work...horrible results with my 20D. You can use the filter Hoya R72 with nightshot only in auto mode....at least that is all I'm using at this time. I need more practice with it after I get a couple days off. Here is a link to some I have done this week. Good Luck!

Actually I like the colors I get from the 20D. It's just the focusing that is a problem. The 717 is more boring :) I finally figured out my problem. I need more than the R72 on it. For now I have a polarizer on as well, and next week I'll get my ND8. But like I said, the pix are far more subtle and don't have those rich deep blue tones. Today, I only edited them in PSE3 and I may get better results in PS. These are three I got today (using the R72 & 3 polarizers LOL)

If I get up early enough tomorrow, I'll take my dog and camera for a walk and get more shots! Isn't this fun?? :)
