If you've followed the price of this lens, you realize that the supply is nearly dried up; early on, "chamcamera" in Korea was selling 3 or 4 at a time on ebay, now it's one, if that. At first a very nice one would go for under $2.5k, now a minty one will bring $3.5k easily. They are overpriced because the demand exceeds supply, and will until Canon releases a follow-on.
The manual-focus Nikon 200/2.0 can be had for just over $1k. KEH currently has three, but only one in excellent conditon. I recently borrowed one from my boss, loved it, but have decided to hold off on the telephoto purchase for now.

It is a serious hunk of glass. It's one of very few lenses on SportsShooter to get consistent 10/10.

Probably the best thing canon ever made :-X They really need to make a more modern version of it with IS.

Don't think so, he accepts Paypal. He ships to Canada only. If you are interested I'll contact him and ask to see the lens, he's in Montreal....

Saw one that had sold recently for $4250. Would you like me to post that you are looking?

Considering the prices that lens is drawing in the second hand market, you'd think Canon would be tempted to put it back into production.

Eveidently that would not be possible within the current restrictions against using lens elements that are not lead and arsenic free

It's possible. Nikon just last year released the VR version of the 200/2.0, priced at just under $4k USD.
The real question is whether it is worth Canon's R&D costs to redesign the lens for the number of them that they would sell. With IS and priced below $4k, I'd guess they'd sell like hotcakes. Too bad all the R&D seems to be going to deathly slow consumer zooms :-P

i would seriously look on KEH. Also - their bargain rated products are in similar condition of 'excellent' rated products elsewhere. It's something to consider if other options run out. |

They seem to be hung up on the idea that adding IS to slow aperture lenses is as good as producing fast aperture lenses.

Yes I would be interested. It does say Paypal at the bottom, but up in the gray it says 6. Payment: Bank wire transfert only
It also says will ship worldwide.
I asked him about Paypal and he has not returned my email. If you could contact him that would be great.

Yep, Spaz. Same reason they dropped the 35-350 I believe. At least we have the 28-300 replacement. :-)
I heard from one pro that talked to a CPS rep that there is no plans to release a 200/1.8 or 200/2 IS because it's significant work to house the IS, and it would make the lens significantly larger. I believe the rep sounded fairly categoric.
