As I dont have a flash bracket, i plan to use the wireless feature of my SB800 and D70 whenever i shoot on portrait (vertical).
One question though... is it ok to set the D70 on commander mode even though if i put the flash on the hotshoe? any impact?
thank you for the comments |

Why would you put the camera on commander mode if the sb800 is on the hotshoe? That sounds pointless.
If you're controlling other strobes, set the sb800 as the master and it will control the others -- otherwise, put the camera in whatever you want.
If you're asking if you can control the sb800 with the on-camera flash, then yes...put the camera in commander mode, put the sb800 off-camera in slave mode and fire away.

its kinda hassle to switch from TTL to commander mode whenever i want to shoot in portrait/vertical (from landscape).
so is it ok to set my D70 on commander mode and attach my Sb800 on the hot while shooting the conventional way (landscape) and just take off the flash if i want to shoot vertical??? |

I'm not seeing the point of pulling the SB800 off the camera when you shoot vertical? What exactly are you trying to accomplish, because I'm not getting it? =)
Note - It is midnite here, so my brain is shutting down.

I think he is putting the camera in commander mode and shooting with the 800 in hotshoe (as normal)and then when he turns vertical he removes the 800 and uses the onboard flash to fire the 800 as a slave while he is holding it away for fill or something. The question is (imo)Is being in commander mode affecting the function of the 800 while it is in the hotshoe? did I understand you correctly?
If so then I understand the question but do not know the answer, good question, I will test it to see
