Hello out there. I took this picture of a weird cloud formation while we were waiting for the movie to start at our new drive-in. Does anyone know about clouds? I'm curious as to what kind they are and why/how they were formed. The clouds were in the West about 9PM on July 22. There was a storm going through our area but it bypassed where we were to the South. It had been a 90+ degree day. There was very little wind at the time.

I believe those are refered to as Cumulonimbus mamma Clouds. Not sure but looks like it. They are seldom seen low to middle clouds. associated with severe wind sqalls, hail, heavy precipitation, tornadoes and thunderstorms. You can google "mamma clouds" and should see some results that look very simular. Try doing google images it should show you some pictures.

Thank-you so much, Scott, for your reply. I agree that they DO look like those kind of clouds, although I believe that my picture is better than the ones they have on the cloud web sites :-) Anyway, I thought they were interesting and now I am happy that I learned something.

Thanks again

Yes, definitely mammatus. If you're lucky enough to catch them near sunset (as you have done) they are nicely illuminated from below. You get much better examples in the US, but we do get them in the UK too. I've not been lucky enough to get on the back edge of the right thunderstorm with the right sunset yet, but here's what they can look like in the cold light of day...

Whoops, managed to completely screw up that post... can't edit out the messed up html either! :-O

Here's the image anyway... hopefully it won't mess up this time!

EDIT: Looks like the image parsing can't cope with the thumbnailer in my gallery. Looks like just a link will have to do!
