I would like to delete the background of one of my past challenge pictures (this one: )
So that my dog seems to be against a plain blue sky. I can just paint over the background but 1. the blue color is too uniform and, more troubling, 2. I can't seem to paint around his whiskers.
Does anyone know a better way to do this? |

What software are you using?
You might want to check out the Post Processing - Selections thread though it's slanted towards photoshop.

Why against a blue sky? Looks fine as is.
you can mask out the dog and then using a 1 pixel paintbrush mask the whiskers.

I think the dog looks good against the tree too (although when I submitted it for a challenge many people disagreed), but I happen to need a picture of him without a background. I'd just take one, but he's at "summer camp" on my parents farm, so I can't right now.
I'm using either photoshop elements or fireworks.
I'm not sure what masking is. |

If you have PS you can use the Extract function. A quick try at it.

That's promising, although it deleted a little too much. Maybe I can play with that, though. Where is the extract function? |

Its up under filters. You can adjust the size of the brush to make a more detailed extraction. Good luck, its a great tool to work with. I would suggest when you open your picture in ps duplicate it about 3 or 5 times. Do the extraction on each and pick the best one or combine them it one shows details that others don't. |

There's a good explanation of the selection tools in this thread.
