I'm kind of new into SLR's and getting a little confused with lens names. //www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3241&navigator=3 and //www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3240&navigator=3 look pretty similar to me, but since the APO lens costs more there must be something into it?

Hahha. Forget it. Just figured out you can actually click on the 'APO'-logo on Sigma homepage and it gives you full explanation. Well, I would still like to hear opinions if I should get the one with APO or not. :)

* APO denotes optical elements created with special optical designs and optical materials to improve their performance. The result is images, which have greater contrast, sharpness and color definition than a comparable non-APO type lens.
* HSM stands for the Hypersonic Motor focusing system. Technically this motor is analogous to Canon's ring USM (or to Nikon's Silent Wave motor), which implies that simultaneous full and manual focus is available. Another benefit of HSM is improved autofocus.
* EX represents Sigma's way to describe the nice finishing of their lenses.

I see you beat me to it though. Based on Canon's improved performance with similar lens construction, I'd say it's worth it; my 10-22mm shows ZERO signs of flare or ghosting when the sun's actuaally IN the frame of the picture...

So... The one with the red stripe is the better one, right?
Both versions have "APO" in the DPC lense section

that pretty much sums it up. APO is definitely sharper and clearer than the non-APO version... but the non-APO lens is not that bad (at least for me)

here's an example.

I'd recommend the APO version. It had no purple fringing when I used it. There is even a newer version called APO II macro in DG. DG denotes a special coating to give better colors and decrease purple fringing even more. You can check German's Sigma site for the description and pictures.
