I spent 1hr plus last night on the wooden challenge and have only voted on 17 shots so far, I like to look long and hard at each onebefre voting.
Am I alone in spending as much ime on each entry? I guess this challenge will take me to sunday at this rate .!!lol

I's never survive such a long examination of each image. I zip through them one by one in one long pass and slot them 5 and 6. Then I go back over the remainder of the week and rescore all the 6's upward if it seems warranted after close examination. Time permitting, I move on to the 5's and start adjusting them downward as needed to 4 mostly. The vast majority of my votes are from 4 to 7.

Similar method:
-I "zip" thru them, assigning 4-8.
-The 5-6's probably won't get looked at again, although some may get comments as I vote.
-The 4's will get a second look and possible lower re-assignment. All 4's and below will get comments.
-The 7-8's will get commented, and the 8's will get a second close look for possible breakouts into 9's and one 10. I always try to end with one top pick and 3-4 secondary picks. All 8's and above will get comments. |

i take about 5-10 seconds for each picture, but i only ever tend to make it to like 20-30% depending on how many entries cause I just get tired of doing it...then I scan through for ones that are really good and give them a rating b/c they deserve it. |

I vote maybe no more than 50 at one sitting as I take time to vote "reasonably" at the submissions. I do leave comments for the photos lower than 4. Photos that are above 7 sometimes get comments from me but mostly if they're in the 9-10 range. When I do comment on the lower ones, I try to be as constructive as possible. If an image doesn't fit the challenge, I don't just downscore them but i also give them criticisms solely based on the image alone.
With the luck I'm having, I'd be glad to get a comment or two on these challenges. I did notice though that when I had an image that placed 5th in a challenge (although DQed a few days later for not being able to provide the original), I got a lot of comments.
If it were only possible to score and then also leave comment, we would all be better photographers.
My two cents.

It normally takes me most of the week also to get through voting on a challenge. I usually open the voting page, then close my eyes and spin my scroll wheel and randomly twirl the mouse around, then click on and start with whatever pic the cursor is on. Then I take em as they come up. Even if I'm running short on time and won't be able to get through the whole thing, I will not 'thumbnail' pick the good ones, to me, that would seem unfair, and cancel out the randomness instilled in the system to ensure fair scoring across the board.
From that point, I also 'group' the pics. Some will not speak to me, and I will probably give them a 5 or 6. Everything better, I give a 7 at least and go back through them later and adjust up accordingly. Anything below a 5, I look at good and hard to make sure I'm not missing something about it and then score accordingly.
Some obvious things I'll skip commenting, for example, a small pic, I don't think they need my comment on top of the 15 or 20 they probably already have about using the full 640, etc. The pics I find really good are easy to comment on, and I also try to specifically look for some middle of the pack photos to comment on, because these are the ones usually lacking the most comments.
Then I just do what I can, and try to be fair and enjoy and learn :-)
And if I think I'm starting to feel 'cranky', I give it a rest and come back later.
Oh, and I usually give bonus points to any images containing flying monkeys in tuxedos !!!

Most of the time I'm looking for photos that are not that obvious, the out of the box photos so to speak, because though technically superb, the obvious ones often don't speak to me at all. They're too much on the safe side - pleasing the mass - if you know what I mean. I like to see photographers stick out their neck, that's what creativity is about. Most of the winning photos lack that creativity, well they are in my personal opinion.
When I reach my 20/30% with what I think is creative thinking I won't rate anymore. I always try to comment when there's something in a photo that strucks me and being an amateur myself I don't pretend to know technical stuff so my comments are mostly about composition/colors/lightening and such.

So the ones that took time to get what they thought was a good shot doesn't deserve your vote because it is not good enough? |

I usually keep one window open to voting whenever I am connected to the internet. Other windows might be dpc forums, Recently Uploaded images, or just general surfing. But if I'm on the net, and there is a challenge which I haven't finished voting, then I have a window devoted to that.

Wow - maybe I don't have a good enough eye. Not to vote above a 7 is astounding to me. OH well...
I vote on every single photo. It may take me several days, but I usually go with my gut. Later, I go back and review and rarely do I change my mind - maybe 10% of the time. I figure if it speaks to me immediately then that is the photographer's intent.
I comment on many as well. I try not to be rude or tactless and if all I can think of is "man, this photo sucks," then I won't say anything.
