Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone could help me out based on their experience...
I will be doing a photo shoot of an event (catering company launch - cocktail party) and I'm not sure how much to charge?
Do I charge a flat rate including photos or do I charge an hourly rate and then price photos individually, and how much to I charge for individual photos? and how do I go about ensuring that I get credit for my photos if they are being used?
Sorry for all the questions... I've never done this before (actually get paid for my photography) and I'm curious. I don't want to get "ripped-off" and I don't want to do the same for the client. They love my food photography and were really interested in me shooting their event... please help...
Thanks!

Hello Kevin,
I have not taken pictures for an event, but I have done many portrait photo shoots. Pricing really depends on how much you want to make. I would first call a few different businesses and get a ball park quote to see what photogs in your area are charging.
After that you should have an idea of what you want to charge. I charge a fee for the photo session and charge for prints separately.
I think you would also have to consider if the client is going to want any retouching of the photographs. You may want to give an all inclusive fee or charge per picture.
Depending on the time you are going to spend on site shooting pictures, equipment you will need to bring and if you need an assitant. All this should be considered when quoting a price. A fee can range from $50 - $500 or more. It's really hard to give a rate unless yiu have an idea of the going rates in your area.
In my area I charge a session fee of $50 for a 90 minute session and $30.00 for every 30 minutes after the initial 90 minutes. I usually get my shoots done in 60 minutes or less. As far as prints, I use MPIX for my prints and the pricing varies by size. I don't charge for basic retouching, but any advanced photoshop work, I will charge by picture. In my area I undercut the competition by about 40-60%. I'm still just starting out, but my clients are happy with the pictures and the service I provide.
Hope this helps. Good luck to you!! |
