OK, I'm new here and could really use some constructive criticism... My only entries have been in the challenges that are currently being voted on. Textures III and Wooden. I realize my entries could have been better. I'm not happy with my wooden entry at all. My only complaint is that I have low scores (which I expected) but most of the comments are very positive. Do the members here believe in "if you don't have anything nice to say..." It's OK ... really... I'm a big boy, I can take it...

Common problem here. Too many people send nasty PMs, give revenge comments, or point people out in the forums for honest comments that are not positive. That scares people from leaving them, or most people are just too nice.
Remind me after the challenge and I'll tell you what I think of them.

Remind me as well.
If I dont like something I will tell you.

I dislike useless comments so I try not to give any...

ditto. remind me. I rarely leave "constructive" comments on images that aren't pretty close to being excellent, in which case I will comment on what might have been done to improve the shot. I got tired of angry/outraged responses to my comments on unsuccesful images.

Thank you... I'll be posting some photos to my portfolio tonight also... would you be willing to critique those also?

I too suffer from this syndrome. From what I gather, there are a lot of thin skinned people out there who plead for comments, yet complain when they are not "compliments". Of course there are also quite a few commentors who don't know the meaning of the word "constructive".

I think this has put off a lot of would-be commentors from giving out the potentially helpful information we need.

My advice is to be extremely grateful for any helpful comment you receive. You can also post individual images and request comments. That works pretty good.

LOL.. I've been watching this site for about one year... Last week I purchased my new camera (see profile)... Now that I have a serious camera I thought I would take it to the next level and participate more actively in this site...

I'm afraid I've become addicted already!

I know what I want on this site.
An update that sends you an instant message each time your score changes!!
I could actually begin to live again, spend time with the wife, focus on work.

Imagine the possibilities of normality once again !!!

Welll. . . . I'm one that leaves a lot of encouraging comments on the pictures I appreciate. Not because I'm afraid of getting bashed if I leave constructive criticism, but because if I appreciate a picture -- even if its not technically perfect, I like to let the person know what I liked about it. There are in fact a lot of rude people who make mean spirited comments, so it's my way of pointing out the positive points in a photograph. Maybe I'll try harder to start pointing out the things I think would make the picture better -- but then -- I wonder -- so much of its subjective -- why do I think I have the inside on what's right and wrong. But I'll try harder to be a little more Constructively criticizing :)

I have no opinion regarding the comments, however if I have learned something here, it is this: If you're not happy with your entry, don't enter it!! I've entered a couple that I've been pretty "iffy" about and gotten 4's across the board. If you're not happy about your entry, it's a good chance no one else will be.

In commenting it is assumed (I hope) that it is the opinion of the commenter. I leave my opinions on what I think would make a shot better, if anything, but I only comment on images I like. My likes and dislikes are not necessarily that close to what the majority DPC voters like so my comments run across the voting range. I often include the score I gave so the member knows.

I have time right now, so I will comment on all images I scored a 4 or lower in the wooden challenge (there are many this time). But I will give a clue right now: "Creativity is Key."

My image is doing less than average in this challenge, but I knew it would when I entered it. However, a few people have gotten what I was striving for so I am satisfied. People who love or hate an image are much more inclined to comment.

So lack of comments is indicative of a "ho-hum" photo? I almost did not submit to the Wooden challenge due to the lack of punch in my photo. I decided to submit at the last minute even though I was lacking inspiration in hopes of getting some feedback (negative and positive) on one of my first attempts at a style I have never tried before.

I don't think it's indicative of anything, in particular. What if the voter doesn't have much time? What if he/she hates typing or just doesn't feel obligated to say why? I typically comment on about 20% of the images, and it really doesn't matter whether they are 1's or 10's. If I feel compelled to say something, I do. If not, I don't.

Fair enough... now tell me what is the Mentorship Program?

Heh... it's a bunch of people who wanted to learn about specific topics and train under a DPC member who was willing to teach it. There are about 10-12 programs running now, each has about 6-12 members. If you're interested, just PM the mentor (links to mentors are on my profile).

This is exactly what I mean. Maybe saying love and hate was too strong, but if an image doesn't move you, it doesn't move you and you won't comment. If it doesn't move 300 voters, they also won't comment.

I usually judge my images by the comments given rather than the score. My texture image has taken 6 days to get 6 comments. Its scoring .4 higher than my Wooden entry, but my wooden entry already has 5 comments and a favorite. My wooden entry is a stronger image, though some like it and some hate it, which is why it has a lower score.

Keep in mind that the texture challenge had over 600 entries. Most people were probably struggling to get thru just simple voting, much less commenting. Wooden has like 150 entries, so people will feel much more comfortable slowing down and saying what they think.

My entries in both challenges are in the 6.1 - 6.3 range. However, after all these days, Texture has only 9 comments and 2 favorites. Wooden already has 11 comments (no fave's).

That's the bizarre thing... Texture has 8 comments and 1 favorite... Wooden only has 1 comment (both in the 4.5 - 5.5 range)
