This is one thing I think you have to remember, just because you know the shutter was open for x# of seconds will the voter feel it.

As soon as the challenge was posted, I set my camera up and set the shutter to "bulb" and I plan on just leaving the shutter open the entire week until just before submission deadline. Sure it may be an all-white image, but you can't get much longer exposure than that! LOL

Nice try. but Bulb only stays open as long as you're pushing the button. One-handed typing, eh?
Robt.
(and yes, I know you'll tell me you have a locking cable release)
And on a related note, WHY don't these high-end dSLRs have a "time" setting, where u click once to open and a second time to close? I HATE "bulb" with a passion...

In the given sjot, of coursew they will: it has motion blur. In general, nope. As I suggested earlier, if it doesn't show obvious signs of being a LONG exposure it's not likely to do well, but the cocnept "long" is relative to the speed of the motion depicted (if indeed motion is being depicted at all).
This means those with P&S cameras can simply work on either shooting fast-moving subjects OR move their cams around agressively during, say, 1/4 or 1/2 second exposures, and they will do fine, assuming the image comes out nice.

Oops! Good reason we can't vote looking at thumbnails only!!! ;^) At first glance I thought it was of those speed or motion filters. My bad! ;^)

Well considering that it is a platic figure that would probably limit it's realistic style of running. ;) |

Another way that Canon has removed what once was a standard feature for SLR's and made it an into an accessory that costs more.
You can still use a standard $10 locking cable release on the Nikon DSLR's. Canon requires an electronic version that costs several times more.
All that griping aside, I have the even more expensive Timer/Controller version of the remote release and it is, without a doubt, one of the most useful accessories available.

Maybe because they assume the photographer will be using a remote. I think that even the cheap remote allows you to lock the button down so you just have to unlock it when you want to close the shutter.

While not a long exposure, but multiple one here of the same subject. |

Ok...I've determined that in daylight hours this is a BIG challenge! I've just been out - set camera to -2.0 exposure, 1 sec shutter, and smallest aperture I can get (F8.0 in manual mode) - and everything is still TOO bright! I don't have any ND filters, just a polarizer (which I also had on to try and reduce incoming light).
Good luck to all!!! Guess it will have to be a low light or evening shot?

The remote for the 300D, the cabled one, can't remember the number offhand, has a lockable button for long exposures. Press it and slide...then release it when ready.

Can't charge you for it if it is already in the camera. But if they put it in the remote switch they can. |

A bit blurry, but my first attempt at star trails. This was a 20 minute exposure (1237 seconds). |

I sure hope I can get away with about 1/4 second with my 1D... Even my 3-4 second shots look pretty speckled.

what kind of aperature is required to do those 20 minute star trail exposures? I try to manage with my camera's max of 30 seconds |

I had the aperture right open (low f number), there is none/little risk of over exposure. The image gets pretty noisy though. |
