Who would have thunk it. See for yourself

P.S. For those that are going to whine that it's not a fair test b/c 300D's ISO was 100, blame Nikon for not making ISO 100.

Here's the odd bit from that page:
"Support this site, buy the Nikon D50
from one of our affiliate retailers"
But no mention of buying the outperforming Canon Rebel!

Perhaps it's not as much an indicator of camera quality as it is lens quality? I think it may have been more fair if the test were performed with a 3rd party lens that was available for both cameras..?

Both tests were perforned with their respective manufacturers' 50mm f/1.4 offerings, and at f/9. IMO the test would not have been lens-limited with either of these two lenses.

But couldn't it be possible that Canon's 50mm f/1.4 is better than Nikon's?

Not to that extent...The 50 1.4 by Canon and Nikon are great quality primes and were stopped down to f/9. At that f-stop lens differences are negligible. Especially for these two primes.

Not at f/9! it's possible that one lens or the other might be better wide open, but at f/9, both lenses should render more detail than the sensors are capable of resolving. Both the Nikkor and Canon 50/1.4's are well-respected primes, and very sharp.

Both were from respective maker's 50mm f1.4 at f9. I don't think most would argue that there would be a big difference in optics. If you used a "third party" lens, then all the lens snobs would say the test is irrelevent since third party lens makes any image look like vomit.

I think we're starting to hit a plateau in sensor/image quality development, where we're only going to get small improvement, if that at all. We seem to have hit a plateau in robustness as well with instant power on and JPEG buffers near 40 shots or so. Now only improvements to make are the drop in prices. Yea, Canon 30D, here I come!!!

Since many companies are merging technology/development (latest being KM and Sony) I'm still hoping Canon and Nikon will merge to make Nikanon. he he he.
