Well, the scales have fallen from my eyes, and life has just gotten more complicated, gawd help me; here's an unaltered jpg of a test shot deliberately underexposed and misbalanced in RAW+jpg:
Here's the same shot run through the RAW editor off its RAW companion, no photoshop was used at all...
All I can say is "sheesh"... Actually, maybe things aren't more complicated now after all. This is a pretty straightforward workflow LOL. But the process of OFFLOADING and organizing is more complicated. Unfortunately I still run Windows Me, so I can't find a RAW solution other than the EOS Viewer utility, but that will do for now.
Before, I was just plugging in my CF reader and using Nikon Capture (which came up automatically) to offload images to an automatically created, sequential directory in my IMG folder. As far as I can see, now I have to do the transfer manually, and I have to start EOS Viewer by clicking its icon to view the RAW files and make the adjustments...

I'm not sure what program you used for these - but RawShooter Essentials and/or CaptureOne will provide the ultimate in workflow for your RAW files. Looks like you're loving your camera - good to hear :)

Don't they both require XP? Canon provided me also with Digital Professional, but it needs XP so I am currently stuck with Eos Viewer Utility. It has a RAW adjustments dialogue box, and that's very simple and easy to use but nor very precise as far as i can see. Regardless, it's good enough to make an image ready-for-photoshop where I can fine tune it. But also I don't have PS CS 'cuz THAT requires xp also, so I have to make the RAW a tiff to put it in PS...
Yeah I know I should upgrade to XP, but it ain't gonna happen until I get a new computer...

Could be - I'm not sure... :( - the thing I really like about them is you can let one file process while you work on the next.. or you can copy settings easily from one to the next (assuming they were all shot in the same light, it should work well for white balance and possibly exposure issues) - it's greatly sped up my RAW processing. Maybe, as bpickard mentioned, you can wait for Vista - 2006 isn't TOO far off.

Yeah, I'll probably just wait for that anyway.

As it's free, couldn't you download it anyway and give it a try? It couldn't do that much harm.

WHOOF... These may not be the greatest pictures, but lawdy me, the dynamic range! I can't even imagine what I'm gonna be able to pull from them when I learn to process 2 separate RAWs and overlay them to extend the range...

Are you going to shoot RAW now so you don't have to use the correct settings while you're out in the field?

Robert - RSE does call for WIN 2000 and up but I would download and try it anyway. My bet is it will work.
What are you running for a chip and memory? |

what would be the best way to merge photos with a high dynamic range?
CS2 HDR blending is not really an option. There's a bug, that crashes the merging function because i have an Ä letter in the user folder (sys admin in finnish) |

Naw. I actually LIKE figuring out the correct settings. but on WB, for instance, I can now fine-tune much more easily to something between, say, "daylight" and "shade". Stuff like that. B/W coinversion from RAW looks interesting too, but I haven't really tried it out. I really don't know how much I'll use it. Sure eats up a LOT of disk space, doesn't it? LOL.
Uusilehto, there's a good tutorial on Luminous Landscape on merging 2 RAW exposures for expanded dynamic range pre-CS2; I haven't tried this out yet.

I just met an old friend at a party a couple weeks ago and he had a D70. It had this embarrassingly small lens on it that made it smaller by far than my 828. I didn't check to see what lens it was but it was remarkably easy to handle and use. Focus was so easy viewing things real time not in the 828 lcd in miniature.
My problem is the body then the expense of lenses. It will add up way to fast. I'll have to wait till the young ones move out of the house before I can afford it.
I can dream though. |
