What are the rules, ethics on using two different shots of basically the same subject/ setup, for two different challenges, but that are cropped and post-processed differently enough so as to be two completely different shots in the end?

Voters may not approve but I don't think there is a rule against it. Using the same shot in more than one challenge is a no no.

I'd say it's ethical and within the rules. "Two different shots" says it all...

However, remember that if one of them turns out as a 'completely different shot' in the end...you may be violating editing rules. Editing that dramatically changes the photo from the original, could be considered for DQ.
Also, I don't think voters will like it as already stated. Although, I'm sure there will be similar shots in the Textures challenge and the Wooden challenge.
Just make sure that the photos you start out with are in fact 2 different photos. If you start with the same photo no matter how much editing you do to them, it will be illegal.

there's nothing 'wrong' with it, per se, but it can remove some of the anonymity of the image in the second challenge.

sometimes, though, the opportunity presents itself and it just can't be helped. consider this situation chris found himself in back in january. the subject he happened to be shooting lent itself to two challenges.

very few people recognized chris's dad from one challenge to the next.
