I feel stupid asking this question, but... I have a D70 and I don't know how to focus on more than one person. For instance, if I am taking a picture of 2 people, one is in focus, one is not. Three people is worse. I manage to focus the outer two and the one in the middle is not in focus.
I generally use auto focus.
Any help would be appreciated.

use a higher F number, that gives you more DOF and more things will be in focus

It depends on how the people are 'arranged' in the frame. If one person is closer to the camera than another then deeper DOF is required to resolve your problem.

try using the AV function on your cam, and set the number to any number above 7.1

Elizabeth-Is that 70-300 zoom your only lens?
At f5-6-7 you should hit a sweet spot at 70mm, your widest angle. Hard to say exactly.

| The right F stop will also depend on if these people are standing basically side by side, or a bit one behind the other. The bigger the difference from front to back, the smaller aperture you need to use, closer to F 11, F 16, etc. Shooting with that second lens at around 50mm should be pretty nice. |

I bet you'll be happy somewhere between f5 and f11. That's a broad range but narrows things down a bit.

| Thank you all so much. I will print this information out on a piece of paper. I am afraid most of my photography consists of pointing and shooting. I have yet to learn the technical skills involved in photography. |
