I want to trade in the kit lens (18-55mm)for the Canon 350D for a better lens. I also already have the Canon 70-300mm IS USM. Any suggestions and what I might expect to pay for it? Thanks. |

Probably better off selling it. If it's in great condition expect about $100.

I don't think you can get much for it... It only costs $100 more to buy with the body new and only works on 300D 350D and 20D. Everyone who wants that lens got it with the camera.
I do agree it's not all that good and a better wide zoom would be a good long term investment. |

Hi Larry,
If you want to replace the 18-55 lens with a better wide-angle zoom, then Canon's 17-40 L f/4.0 is a great option that costs about $600. But the most useful all-around lens that I have, which would be a nice complement to your longer lens, is the Canon 28-135 IS f/3.5-5.6 for about $450. It's a great walking-around lens that I use for about 80% of my shooting. The pricing is from memory, so please check for accurate amounts. Happy shopping!

There's a few on ebay.com for $60-70 before the auction finishes. As kyebosh says, $100 is pretty reasonable. example

Thanks, folks. This helps a lot. I think I will start pricing the
28-135 IS. I really am looking for a good walk-around lens. I really don't care for the kit lens. |

the 28-135 becomes a 45-216 on your rebel though...45mm may not be wide enough for a good walking around lens. Really, if you're going to get anything, it would probably have to start in the 17-18 range -- such as the 17-40 f/4L

what about the 17-85 canon...does anyone have it?
I am very curious about the sharpness on it.

I'm sorry I don't have one but reading all the reviews, they seem mixed. You might want to visit the dpreview.com and see the Canon SLR lens forum and do a search there.
My personal feeling is it an acceptable lens, not the best nor the worst. It is however expensive at about $600 or so. Some others to consider are Canon 17-40L, 16-35L, 24-70L,Tamron 28-75 XR Di (as usual), Tamron 17-35 Di, Sigma 18-50 EX f2.8, Sigma 18-125, Sigma 24-60. However if you are looking to cover the 18-70mm range, then the Canon 17-85 and the Sigma 18-125 are your only real options.
My personal recommendation is to split the range with two zooms. For example, a Canon 17-40L/16-35 or Sigma 18-50EX or Tamron and a Canon 24-70L, or Sigma 24-60, or Tamron 28-75 will give you a 18-70/75 range and the lenses will be faster and I think optically better. Given everything else being equal a lens that covers a shorter range is usually optically better than a lens that covers a much wider range.
Good luck.
