I have a new studio set up... and I am very new at doing it.. mostly I shoot outdoors in natural light, but I thought I would give studio work a try. I want to learn to do high key shots, but I cant get my background to look right. I have 4 (500) watt hot lights. Two have softboxes and two have reflectors. I had one of the two without softboxes against the backdrop, one with a softbox as a fill light, and another with a softbox as the main light. I cant seem to get my backgrounds white enough. Also, my subjects look red... someone said I should create a custom white balance, but I cant seem to get that right either. Anyone able to help me?

You may need to shine more lights on your background than you do on your subject in order to blow it out - and make sure that your subject isn't right up against the background.. use a small enough aperture, etc.

As for the custom white balance, I believe you can just take a picture of a white surface and then (at least on the 300D) go to the preferences, choose Custom WB and then choose the image that is supposed to be white.

Kia Ora, the light on your background should be at least 1 stop greater than. on the subject. Ie if your exposure is F5.6 on the subject the background should be F16.
High key lighting should be soft and full. One light In front and above the subject with white felectors such as styrofoam boards can work well for the subect lighting.
not uch help on the white balance as I use Flash studio lights and find the auto setting is ok for me . hope this helps .

4 x 500 hotlight...especially if you diffuse it...is not very much, I think that you're main problem for highkey (not seeing any of your shots) is a lack of power.
