I was reading the rules for basic editing and most rules apply to Photoshop. But they say Neat Image is allowed.

In Picasa there is a filter called Glow. On some photos it seems to clean up the shot and give it an extra "pop" similiar to Neat Image.

Is this considered a no-no filter. I am trying to understand the rules as I have just sent in my first challenge (without using Picasa).

Thanks for any help.

I would say this is considered a filter by the way you described it.
I have no experience with Picasa.

Sounds like it's probably illegal for Basic, but legal for Advanced challenges (if not applied to excess).

Could you post a sample before and after photo?

Probably any filter could be used in a way to make the photo look legal, but this sounds like it has the capability of doing more special effects, and is not dedicated to image clean-up.

"Glow" does not seem intended to describe something intended to "clean up" an image.

with picasa the editing is applied to the entire image. I have been playing with Picasa and it does some cool stuff, but I dont like the limited control. Also its a bugger to edit the image and save it as a new image with out altering the original.

I've not used Picasa for challenges but I do use it for printing - very useful tool

Here is an image I did real quick to show what the filter does. I guess I questioned the legality of it because it does apply the filter to the entire image.

Without filter.

With filter.

Agreed, as a user of Picasa I've avoided the 'fancy' filters, in the case of this image I think that you could have done better sticking to the basic enhancements (that perform level adjustments) and then used one pass through 'sharpen'.

I would aslo have to agree that the orignal does look better to,,kinda funny that, that would be the case. Great shot I do like it.

Should be legal. I use Picasa2, but only to index my photos. I tried using it as a quick and dirty editor for one challenge, but the 4.8 score made me decide that PS was probably smarter (that and actually taking a good picture!!)

It's a GREAT indexing program, and interfaces with another program called Blogger, whose function should be self-evident!

I would say no, it's not legal.

The rules say:

As GeneralE said, "'Glow' does not seem intended to describe something intended to 'clean up' an image." I would consider it a special effect filter and it is listed under the "effects" in Picasa as well.

Well, I think I have my answer. Not Legal. Okay.

And just a word on my two images. It was just the first one I selected to be used as an example. I too like the first one better. Let's see if Airliners.net agrees?

The "glow" filter actually works quite well on portraits. It gives it a nice soft touch.

Anywho, thanks to all those that commented.
