I like the professionalism of using real names, but I also know most people here by the user aliases.

How about an option in the poll for:
"Real name for photos and Username for forums and comments etc"
10/11/2002 02:18:15 AM · #2
or
"The option to choose either of these 3 choices in the Preferences menu"

I think I'd prefer to stick with my username. If anyone wants to know more about me they can visit my profile.

What about an option in the profile for each user to decide this for themselves, would that be possible?

If not, perhaps Drew and Langdon would be willing to allow some users to change their usernames? Those who want full names to show could simply change their usernames to reflect this. Those who don't could have usernames as many are now - just abbreviations or nicknames.

i think whatever option is chosen, the name used for the photos and the forums should be the same.

The results and photo pages used to show real name. Many users requested that they be changed to show username, so it was changed a few months ago.

In the old days when we competed with our 35mm cameras, we always used our own names. I can´t see why we shouldn´t do the same here. I love to see my name when I have done well and I must accept to see it when I have don not so good.

Which I like, because I know most people by their username. For those that don't visit the forums, it's probably not an issue.

I prefer usernames. Im not comfortable having casual aquaintences or some members of my family be able to use google and find out I have controversial views on Ansel Adams, or discover that awful clock I got last Xmas wasnt accidentally dropped, but appears in 'A Smashing Time'.

This web site isnt a problem, but I post on some discussion boards where I really wouldnt want stuff being trivially associated with me out of context.

I'm not sure why this is even an issue.

If you want people to use your real name, then choose your real name as the user name...issue solved.

It should be a persons choice here IMO.

Yup, that was one of my suggestions. I am sure if anyone asks Drew or Langdon they'd be happy to change their username - not multiple times for each user but surely as a one off per person for anyone who feels they chose badly and want to change their username to show their real/ full name...

Fair points, but if I suddenly changed my username to Ben Roberts no-one would know who I was!

Yeah, but you can change your name all day long, while you have to go through us to change your username. Kavey's correct in saying we'll do it for users who ask nicely, but not multiple times :)

I had thought in the beginning to change my username, as I didn't have the forethought to know that my username would be how everyone knows me on the site.. I thought it was for my personal access only when I signed up. Now, I feel like it's water under the bridge as it is too late in the game to get everyone to know me by a more creative alias, so my username and real name stand as they are.. the same. :)

My decision is simple. When I signed up for AOL 7 years ago, I typed in a really cool name, and apparently it was taken, so it made up a name for me and I accidently hit accept. So there I was Hbunch7187. Since then, I've been known as hbunch7187. Everywhere I go, I'm hbunch7187. I'd be surprised if I hadn't signed a check or important document with that at one time of another. Real name? Heather Lancaster. Nice to meet you. :)
Hey Ben, words out, we know who you are. :)

I used to have my name as my username, then I found one I liked. Drew and Lang were nice enough to change it for me.

I've never been good with handles/usernames, so I always tend to use my real name or some variation of it. "lisae" is just my first name and initial, stuck together with no capitals. It drives people crazy trying to pronounce it, but just think "Lisa E." :)

I think people need the option to use handles/usernames because this is the internet, everything you say or do is archived and indexed by google, etc. There are no walls, no protection, so people have to build their own, and usernames are part of that.

Funny, when I saw your name, and knew that you were from Australia, in my head it was Lisae (Lisa with a long "a" sound at the end) in a strong Aussie accent.

I voted to stay with user names, because that is how I know people. Also, if we have two say... (insert the most common name in your country here), the user names will be different for each, but how would we differentiate just based on names? With a world wide audience, sooner or later it will happen.

Lisa, same here, I tend to use variations on my name. Kavey is just a nickname for Kavita, and it's one given to me at some point years ago, by friends, and it stuck.
I use it mostly because it's what friends call me in person too.

I tried different user names at different sites till the time it became difficult for me to remember them. A few months back I got so confused after reinstalling windows ( all the cookies were gone!!), that I decided to use my name as my user name.

I am still unable to log on to some sites with my old user names (which I don't remember)! So i guess it really helps if there is a good relationship between the user name and the actual name ( if not exactly the same)!
