i just got my light kit that came with 2 smith-victor 700SG's and when i turned them on they started smoking. the manual says it's normal for them to smoke 15-20 minutes when you first use them but after 20 minutes they still smoked. now my bedroom smells like toxic fumes because i guess the hot bulbs melt down some of the paint on the lights. the bulbs are 600 watts each and they are extremely bright. the manual says they can explode at any second. and now im really scared.

They'd go right back in the box and to where they came from tomorrow first thing, if it were me. I don't think you save that much money by using hot lights and they seem a lot more dangerous.

I'm an old hand with SV hot lights. Every time we got new ones, they's burn for a while. Half an hour wasn't unusual. Take 'em outside to burn 'em in. Also, on basic principles you want to use them in a well-ventilated space, just for issues of heat buildup in the room. I'd hate to run those lights in, say, a 10x12 room with one window and an 8-foot ceiling.

Personally, I FAR prefer hot lamps for product and still life work. With people in the mix, strobes are the weapon of choice, of course.

hmmm strobes cost so much. i'll mostly use these lights outside at night for shooting people. what strobes would you guys recommend? i was thinking about getting a set of ex speedlites and a transmitter. so it could be very portable. any recommendations on strobes or any comments on getting that speedlite/transmitter set?
