Hi,

This might be a stupid question, but how come on cameras such as the 300D is there not an autofocus point in the diagonal areas which are kind of in the right places for the rule of thirds?

Cheers

Alex

well usally there is a box where it would be I have th 350d.The camera alot of times will still foucs on whats in the center unless you go into the menu and tell it which point to use I'm sure your camera has somthing similar. if not use the sutter lock feature look at the subject with them in the middle hold down the sutter half way repostion and take the shot. does this answer your question or where you just asking to ask?

sort of. Basically I can set the autofocus point in 7 areas. middle, top, bottom, left, far left, right and far right. No diagonals.

I suppose like you said you could just do the workaround tech of recomposing the shot. Hassle

there is a mode where you can chose which of the 7 points it will use and only that one you chose. I dont have my camera near me to tell how I do it but play around hopfully someone else knows what im talking about and can help more.

I'll think you'll find that the answer is in the marketing department at Canon...

The real cost of that feature would make litle difference to the retail price of the camera, but then they'd not be able to sell as many 20D's to people who like 9 AF points, and having the 4 points in the right spots for 3rds composition, and the quick selection method for them.

They have to maintain the difference between consumer, prosumer and professional models, and when the marketing chaps sat down and looked at the feature list for the rebel, this is one thing they picked on to shave the cost, and keep it the 'consumer' model. For this same reason you'll not see the 45 point predictive focus, or interchangeable focus screens in the 20D replacement when it comes out, as they are 'pro' features.

I might be wrong, but I'd stake my toenail clippings on it. :-).

Cheers, Me.

edit: Ooo, I forgot, my pet feature that seems to be for '1' canons only, ISO in the viewfinder as you change it...

Rule of thirds doesn't use "diagonals" anyway, it generates 4 lines and 4 intersections.

Robt.

I thought that the four intersections were the place of best use?no?

Yup... And if you wanted to you could say they were 'diagonal' to the centre.. It's all in how you describe it.
