I love IR!!! My F828 is not being sold, even if I do get a 20D. My best shot is an IR. I love what it does to trees. |

I'd like to join, too.
I used to take IR photos with my powershot pro 1. It was very easy and I had great results.
So far I only had one go with the IR filter on my 20D and immediately gave up on it. It was very hard to do, and looked awful (including hotspot). Hopefully it was 100% my fault, and I can learn how to overcome the problems and try again.
I'll be away for the next three weeks, but would love to get busy when I get back. |

Like Alienyst said, I've read on here that it won't work on the 20D and so I've never picked up a larger IR filter. I had no idea it depended on the lens. That's great information.
I've put this thread on my 'watch' list. I hope to learn a lot.

Laura - the problem with the 20D, if not all recent models of all cameras, is that they have a low pass filter in it. That just means that either A. you perform surgery to remove it or B. your IR shots will involve long exposures. With a tripod and remote cable, it's no big deal, though being able to take IR handheld would be a treat LOL Seems the only way to do that is to get an old camera.
I'm just learning here and hope to be able to absorb the wisdom of someone with field experience :) |
Thanks for the reply papagei. I've actually looked into the 20Da because I read on this site that it would be good for IR but I just couldn't justify the expense. If all it takes to get IR shots on the 20D is a long exposure then I've got a lot of catching up to do!
I'm pretty happy with the shots I get from the 950, but I would love to be able to shoot IR with the canon.
Marbo is one of my favorites on this site and his IR shots are brilliant. I would love to learn from him. Thanks to TheStick for sending him a PM. We'll all just have to keep our fingers crossed.
edited to add that I checked the site of lenses and just wanted to say I'm getting pretty excited now...I've got the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 Things are looking up!

Ok..here is the first attempt at IR with my 20D. The EXIF information for the photo is listed. I did a little work with PSCS, curves, convert to grayscale, etc....adjusted a few things here and there. Let me know what you think. Not very sharp, but I was approx. 30-45 feet away, used auto focus, then manually zoomed in just a tad bit more.
Thanks in advance!

Not a strong focal point to draw the eyes too. Like mine the thumb nail looks dead on then when opened larger gets a little fuzzy, although not as bad as mine. Have you tried any in Night Mode? |

Nope...this was just a snapshot..not really trying to get anything print worthy..just went out on a friends porch and snapped this off. I haven't had time to work much with taking any...if the weather is good, I'm going out to take a lot more on Monday.

I have 2 IRs here.
Both taken with a tripod and 4 second shutter. Looked good on small screen till I got home and opened them. Not much post processing. Different white balances for each. |

Great sharpness, Zero! What settings did you use? I really like the first one with the path pulling you to the left. Second one seems a little too dark, IMHO.
We need more IRs! Who's got 'em? |

Zero, those are some great IR shots. Like TheStick, I also would like to know what setting you used to achieve such optimal results. Both in-camera and post processing if you have the time.
Thanks!

Here are a few shots I've taken with the Coolpix 950.
It's still very much a learning experience.

Could everyone who's posted images in this thread add the shot details please. shutter, aperature, ISO and any filters you used. This info would be helpful.
Thanks.

Truegsht, that is a definite improvement over your first attempt. I'm pretty excited by the idea of being able to do IR with the 20d. Keep practicing and make it easy on the rest of us by figuring everything out. lol
I don't know if this will work or not, but I read somewhere that you should focus on your subject first without the filter then screw the IR filter on. I've never tried it myself so I don't know if that even makes sense.
As requested, I've updated my portfolio with the info on each shot I posted. All were taken in auto focus mode with the wratten IR filter.
Is the mentorship still a possibility? Are we looking for someone else to ask to mentor us?

The IR focus point is in a slightly different spot that the focus point for visible light. If shooting at large aperatures this could be a problem if using this focusing method. I think you have to focus a bit in front of your subject. (just what I've read, not from experience)

Well, after all of this talk on IR photography, I dediced to go and order me a Hoya filter. It'll be here in a week. I'm so excited. Hopefully we can still get something going with a mentorship on this subject. I'll check up and see.

don't suppose there is a link of listed cameras that do and don't do well with ir filters... i'd love to pickup one of these filters just to mess around with. |

If you turn on your camera and point a infrared remote control at it (almost all are) and if you can see the little light in your lcd they your ready to go! |

I'm actually buying another camera just for this. I'm looking for the Sony F717 or F707....whichever I can grab fast. Been watching on Ebay..but no luck yet!

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. From my research, the Oly 2020, 2000, & Nikon Coolpix950 are the best for this. Have you found any others?
I finally got the R72 filter and shot a few yesterday. Most are awfully noisy and of course, blurry since the exposures are so long. I did manage to get one good one...

I spent a weekend trying infrared with the 10D. Annoyingly frustrating to say the least. It would be fun though to have a camera that excelled at it that I could dedicate for this sort of photography.
