Crisp B&W shots...

Hi all! I'm a total novice (and newbie here at dpchallenge). my interest in photography is to take professional looking photos of my family.

Here is my question, How do you get your B&W images to look so darn crisp? I'm also interested in shooting with natural light only, and for some reason, the shots i've been taking seem grainy.

What settings do you use (if you have a fav setting?) We just bought a nikon d70, and I've been shooting in portrait and program mode (in RAW format). My images just aren't as crisp as others that i see on this site and on other sites. I know that practice makes perfect, i just don't know where to start.

Is there a filter that people are using to get such amazing results in b&w?

any advice is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest first posting some samples for us to look at. Secondly, are you using any post processing software to sharpen them up?

Thanks for replying...I'll post some examples later on this evening (our network is not cooperating at the moment).

And, yes, I am doing some post processing (not much though). Is that what people do? i've only been adjusting the white balance in teh RAW format and playing with the midtones/highlights/shadows. i find that when i start any pp, the quality/crispness of the photo deteriorates significantly. I'll post an example later this evening.

thanks again!

It's not that I'm lazy, just too many other things to do. If there is an easy way to do something I generally choose that path.

I use filters (plugins) to post processing b/w...

Check these Samples (not mine)... of shots processed with the Virtual Photographer Plug-in.
