I'll offer my 2cts for you.
Both images seem out of focus. I do like the dark feel & colors of the first one, but the focus issue makes it unappealing to look at. Interesting angle. The background object could be centered more. |

Have to agree with the soft focus, this is probably due to two things...your lighting (which is very nice for this image), and the fact that your shooting glass.
Try to either manually focus it or set your exposure settings and focus on something else solid the same distance away from you as the subject. If possible maybe just place a piece of paper up in front, focus then take down and shoot.
I like the colors and effect you have on the first one.
