I am wondering if this lens should be able to be used in all the shooting types on a canon 10d. does it work with Av, Tv, Manuel, P?

it did on mine. i would be more concerned about the autofocus settings, than the exposure settings.

were your autofocus settings a little off?

The AF on this lens can be very slow in macro situations (though that may be the norm - I'm new to this whole thing.. only have had it for a few days of use so far).

The lens will be compatible with all operational modes of the camera, and will function well as a short tele lens as well as a macro lens.
The AF will be slow, since it's a macro lens. The focus motor needs to turn the focus mechanism a long way, and needs to be very accurate. Even the Canon 100/2.8 Macro USM is rather slow to focus, despite the USM (though it is best-in-class in that department for the 100mm-class macro lenses).
For macro, you will be much better off pre-setting focus manually to obtain the magnification you want, and then focusing by moving the camera nearer or farther from the subject.

I love that lens more than life itself. It did me justice in the Macro V Challenge and the price is right compared to Nikkor or Canon.

I use the autofocus all the time and once in a while it doesn't find it's target but that happens with my other lenses as well.

I agree with the others here. The Sigma EX 105mm is a great value for the price. I used it in the Macro V challenge, reverse-mounting an old Minolta 50mm lens on it to get up close and personal with my PC monitor. While my photo got the absolute worst score of my 74 submissions to date (LOL), I was amazed at the detail and sharpness this lens produces. The razor-thin DOF dictated that I use a tripod, manual controls, and a remote shutter release. As Kirbic indicates, manual is the way to go with this lens...

Practical Photography rates this lens pretty well, just behind the Canon and the Nikon version for a lot less money.
I've never used it but others seem to like this lens quite a bit.
BTW, Sigma has a new 150mm DG Macro lens as well. Review very well at Popular Photography.

It's a great lens. The AF sucks, even if you use the limiter, for macro, I just switch it off and go manual. Doesn't have HSM, so you have to both switch off and disengage the focus motor to get to MF.

The lens is SHARP tho. Look at Jacko's macro shots done with the Sigma.
