Okay, here's the deal. My sister just wrote me a letter from Thailand and made me really want to visit her (the part about sitting on her balcony and watching the elephants graze in the meadow is what got me)...problem is, it's super expensive.

Some of you travel a lot, right? There's a million different travel options and I'm not sure what to look into...everything I've seen is at least $2900 Canadian.

I'd be flying from Toronto and heading to Bangkok. Any time of year would do...one week stay would be best...your suggestions?

If you will be staying with your sister, the best way to make the most of your expenditure would be to stay for longer than 1 week - your costs are frontloaded into the flight, making the $/day cost very high for just one week.

If you cannot stand your sister for more than a week, I understand that Thailand is an extremely cheap country to travel and stay in once you get there. Lots to see & do.

If you can be flexible, last minute flights (truly last minute) may be the cheapest way to go. Alternatively, do the obvious things such as avoid school holidays, travel over at least one weekend (avoiding the surcharge paid by weekday only business travellers). I find that some of the local specialist flight sourcing travel agents can be better than internet deals, but worth checking around.

Good luck and hope you manage to do it - sounds wonderful! If you manage it before the end of this week, you'd have a great "not at the zoo" entry.

Go to www.travelocity.com and try to book. Choose flexible dates and you might get a flight for around $1900.00CND.

Good Luck

My brother-in-law lives in Japan and has traveled to Thailand many times. Here's a link to some of his travel pictures (GF is a lacquer artist): Ken's Travel Pics

I'll drop him a note and see if he has any tips for you on traveling in the region.

If you get a chance you really need to go! Thailand is beautiful, I love it there. As previously posted, be flexible in your travel schedule and book well in advance for >1 week stay and you may find a good deal. For hotels, etc. (if needed) if your sister can book it from within Thailand, you should save significant $$. I know when my co-workers in Singapore booked my last stay (at a 5-star hotel, no less) they got a deal I could not have hoped to come close to.

Thailand is extremely cheap. I went there two years ago and spent $2000 in one month. Most of it was spent on tickets.

I just saw a National Geographic thing that said elephants are one of the most deadly animals. 10 people die per week (world wide) from elephant attacks! Don't get too close.

If you want to travel really cheap, I suggest never book hotels! just take the flight and look for an accomodation once you are there. I always travel this way and I ALWAYS find room in small and clean hotels(well, not always perfectly clean), with friendly staff!
What's more, if you choose the hotel once you get there, you are sure that it is ok for you (some people book hotels that seem ok on the internet and when they arrive they discover that it is too far from city centre, too noisy or whatever)
you may look for flights on //www.whichbudget.com/ or you may go to the airport each day, hoping someone who bought the ticket won't show up (and this will make your ticket really very very cheap!)
good luck!

You might want to ask your sister how expensive it is to buy plane tickets once you are already over there. Sometimes it will be cheaper to buy a one-way from the US to Asia, and then find another one-way while your over there (either in thailand, or out of another neighboring country and then get there by train/bus). That way you also have the benifit of an open-ended plan, so if you decide you like it alot you can stay longer than a week without worrying about extra re-scheduling costs.

Thanks for the tips...there will be almost no cost once I get there. Free accomodations, plus everything is very very cheap over there.

I'm just looking for a flight from Toronto...keep those ideas coming!
